The Brainerd Lions second annual Fishing For Dogs tournament is set for several area lakes Saturday, July 27.

The motivation for the tournament is to make sure people with physical challenges have the resources they need to live independently and the best lives they can.

“We host this tournament to raise awareness and funds for training, placing and caring for the needs of service dogs in our community,” said Mike LaFlex, fishing tournament chair, in a news release. “Lions Clubs support several organizations including Leader Dogs for the Blind, and Can-Do Canines.”

The two-person team fishing event targets “hammer handles,” better known as northern pike, under 22 inches in length. Each team can weigh in 10 northerns for the chance to win first prize of $1,000. The first 10 teams all win cash prizes. The teams will fish on Bay Lake, Crooked Lake Chain, or a third lake yet to be designated.

Event registration is 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 26, at The Woods Restaurant and Bar, 19624 County Road 3, near Merrifield. Each team will draw for their lake at the registration. Saturday, teams meet at the public access of their assigned lake and check in and out with contest officials. The weigh in and awards ceremony will begin at 3:30 p.m. on the grounds of The Woods Restaurant and Bar.

Entry fee for the contest is $150, and registration forms can be found on the Brainerd Lion’s Facebook page as well as the website of www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/brainerd. Teams can register as late as 7 p.m. Friday until the 120 team maximum is reached.

The event is sponsored by Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Anderson Brothers, WW Thompson Concrete Products, The Woods, and American Steel Supply Incorporated.
