I like driving along 61 by Red Wing and lake city and following the Mississsippi....plus hitting all the apple stands along the way for goodies.

Took these down in Rushford  and the Lanesboro area at the historic dam last year on a late August road trip...we continued down to Whalan, and stopped in a historic pie shoppe for  a slice of pie....I love those little on the road restaurants/eats shops. Stopped on the way back in Preston at the Branding iron for a superb shrimp and steak meal....one of the last "supper clubs" around.

We did part of the North Shore route, Duluth to Gooseberry Falls, 1 Fall. Gorgeous scenery  but very busy. The Edge of the Wilderness route goes through Marcel & only ~ 20 miles from us too.

I agree with Gunner on the road to Marcel from Grand Rapids.  We used to go camping there years ago to North Star Lake and others.  I believe that is hwy 38.  Great drive and scenic.  Cant beat the North Shore all the way up to the border.  Gunflint Trail and all of the roads in the Arrowhead reagion.  Hwy no. 1 near Silver Bay that goes up to ELY is no. 1 for me in the fall.  All of the forest roads that wind around there as well plus the Finland/Isabella area.  Lot of areas there that you can fish from shore also.  good luck.

One of my first stops on a  northern scenic drive would be to pull into RH's yard....I'd just follow my nose.  :rotflmao:

You got it, RH, it's Co Rd 38. Lots of twists & turns from GR to Marcel. We tried to take MN 1 from Big Fork to the North Shore that Fall we went to Gooseberry Falls but bailed when we got to Hwy 53. Too many hills/curves & even some hair pin turns in that 1. I remember at least 1 was ~ 90 * & 15 mph, I couldn't believe all the old barns still standing along that (Mn 1) road.

If you get the right fall the MN River Valley up by Mankato is pretty. There are some newly redone roads on some of it so if I get the right weekend I'd like to take the Stude that direction. The trouble with this area is it seems we get a nice start on color and the wind wrecks things in a matter of a day or two.  I am partial to the SE corner of the state. Lots of little winding roads in the Root River valleys & along its tributaries.  :happy1:

One year, probably 20 years ago or thereabouts, the warden and I started driving minimum maintenance roads in SE Minnesota whilst having a few adult beverages. Started South of Lanesboro and ended up in Caledonia eventually. Sure was pretty. Late September I believe.

:rotflmao: :rotflmao:  Wirt is 93 miles south of us.  We go to Northhome then south to Dora Lake Road.  Then over to Wirt.

It is by Glenns cabin.  Does that help?  Wirt is just a small hamlet with a closed store and a few houses.
