sat nite when we went  down for a couple beers and to find out when the game feed was the guy that usually puts it on says he's waiting word on conditions of some lake out in sconnieville to go sturgeon spearing. he said they havent plowed any roads out to where there where doing this. guess its piles up pretty good out there to.

anyways he was telling me some years back when they where out there it was so warm the water was running in the cracks of the ice it split open as wide as a truck. he got the hell outta there. he heard 15 vehicles went in that year!!!!!!

Well a first for me,what happened to the towing truck for said castle?

They don't use tow trucks with that. It's done with electric winches on a winch frame, then pulled on ice after it's out with an ATV, skid-loader, whatever. Note it's on the same lake!

I ment the truck pulling the wheel house or did they pull that out 1st? just curious,bad day for someone.

Many years ago my brothers truck slowly broke through the ice on a well traveled road,  just his bad luck he had to be the one that day.  So he had to get it taken out.  Don't know how they did it or how much it was back then.  Water was shallow but the front end went under.  Brother got out fine.  Had it towed home and let it dry out for a few days and thought the truck was toast but it started right up and ran good for him for a few more years.  They got it out the same day so maybe that's why there was no damage to the engine.  How many of these vehicles turn out fine after they dry out or is it the longer they are under it is then there are problems.  good luck.

Sold a friend a brand new chevy 2500HD diesel years back had it less than a week then this happened following a resort truck out pulling a skid shack over a bridge on mille lacs,poor bastard didn't even have license plates yet..... we were stickin walleyes on sloppy joes,told said friend we were on wheelers and ice was scetchy don't drive out 6"s under snow and 12/13"s of clear ice no snow but told him to call me and i'd pick him up we'll the "catching fish bug bit him in the ass wilst following the resort truck out,they were crapty pants scared as they drove out cause doors were open.front end dropped but resort truck secured timbers under rear axel to keep it from 20fow,recovery truck that day was pulling another rig out from hunters pt1st break and it went down slideding the cage over the submerged truck it was salvaging,all this was happening wilst we fished wondering where our buddy was,next day report said 13 rigs dropped in,,,this was the 1st week in january

P.S this truck was totaled and his ins paid for it,bought another new HD and hasn't ice fished since.

Even though some those resort trucks have diesels in em they are stripped down with longer wheel bases from what I've seen.

What a bummer that would be.  I can't believe the chances we used to take with our nice trucks on lakes.  Always wanted to be the first ones.  NO WAY now!!!   We were so lucky.

Not I, said the red hen! I was always last out on the ice, and still queasy. Saw too many go thru. Just talking about that today, had a meeting with a member of Olmsted County Sheriff's Dive Recovery team. Not fun looking for someone under the ice.

I remember when I was a young man I went by foot and a chizel out on Grindstone Lake near Sandstone.  It's a deep lake, very deep.  One of the last lakes to freeze.  Even then I knew about springs near shore and to be careful.  There was 10 inches away from shore about 25 yards.  But I wanted to get closer because that's where the rainbows are during hard water.  Walked where I knew there was about 6 feet of water.  Put my chizel down and it went right through.  I think it was about over an inch of ice.  This was mid January.  There is no safe ice ever.  I'm like most of you guy's.  Don't drive out away from the beaten path or ice road unless I know there is plenty of ice.  I just shake my head when I see these trucks go under.  Just glad the drivers are ok to go home to their family's.  good luck.
