Looks like the DNR was listing to our (and others in the area) and created a new bear permit area.  Although it's no a No-Quota area, there will be unlimited over the counter licenses.  I will have to start a bear management plan.

I agree, its very exciting. Too bad my land is only two miles north of the border, and there seems to be minimal state land in that new zone. Either way I will be out in 451 some where. I still have three more points needed for zone 45.

Time to get bear apps in now is it not? We have plenty of points to draw this year.

Deputy338 brings up a good point.  How are preference points handled if you have been applying in a zone that changes to a new zone where you don't need to apply.  If you buy one in the new zone, do you lose your points?

email the DNR and ask them. That is what I do and usually get a response back in a day or 2. Then you have the answer in writing.

I don't recall the finer details but the DNR changed the boundries where we hunt around the cabin some years back. the zone used to include parts of the leech lake indian reservation. they realigned the reservation to its own bear permit zone, so we had to decide what zone to hunt and chose to hunt in the cabin zone hence eliminating the couple baits we set out that way.

I don't recall it really changing our preference points status....but i'm getting older and memory could be lacking in that dept.

oh and the deadline to apply for a permit is may 1.

I think years back when we had the state wide lottery for doe permits the preference points went to the hunter, not the deer permit area they hunted. If you had a bunch of points and went to a new deer permit area you would get a permit before someone who hunted there for years and had no or fewer preference points. I could be wrong on this too, it's been awhile. Good luck getting the bear permits. :happy1:

markn, thanks, you may be right about the points staying with the hunter not the area.  I guess it doesn't matter too much either way as I would not have gotten a bear permit this year even with my preference points.  Now, due to the change, I don't have to apply, just go buy one.  Quite a change from only getting one ever 5 years or so.  Kudos to the DNR wildlife managers for listing to us. I only hope it doesn't become a free for all in the new zone.
There were less bears around last fall compared to 2018 when I had to carry a gun for protection while bow hunting.

The pictures previously post were from last fall.  These are from the previous fall.
Most of you may have seen some of these but it's fun to see again.  I shot the one with my bow
while deer hunting.  And yes, that is what I was wearing that day.

He wasn't a huge bear but he did tip the scale at 250 lbs.  If you remember this SOB stalked me right to my deer stand.   :angry2:

Boar, you are right this was a great tasting bear. Lots of people wanted to try some so I think I ended up giving away a lot of it.   :pouty:
