Here is a good video of a ship going through the channel at Duluth.  Well done video. Nice to see all of the people walking around having fun.  I realize I am craving that to a point.  You can skip ahead at the boring beginning.

Yep seen many myself.  When I was a kid living in Duluth that fog horn would come on during the night.  Was a cool sound plus when you are at the canal the horns back and forth from the ship and the lift bridge was alway cool.  good luck.

I love the foghorns at nite...and train horns. Make me fall right asleep. Used to like loons, but they get screaming so loud at 3:00 am sometimes it's unreal.

Glad you mentioned loons.  For so many years that I have spent up north camping and in the boundary waters, the sound from the loons are something I can't get enough of.  I would wake up many nights in the tent when everyone else was sleeping and heard the calls.  Put a smile on my face and bring many memories of where I was at the time.  I'm looking forward to this year when I'm up there and look forward to the calls.  good luck.

My favorite ships horn is the James Barker. It is loud and low pitched and just shakes you when it is passing thru the canal.

Welcome LL.  You are on your first post.   :happy1:  Don't be offended by any of us.  We all think we know it all at times and we all think we are funnier than the rest of the guys.

AND I do like watching ships too.  I am finally utilizing Youtube more.  So many cool ship things.  Bad weather things.  My favorite are the tugs.

Here is a link to the page where you can listen to the horns of the ships that come thru the canal the most.

Been on this site for years but almost exclusively in the Cooking Forum.  Decided tocheck out a couple other topics.  See a lot of familiar names and cool to see that there's other boatnerds on this site as well!  Ever since taking family trips to the north shore as a kid, I've been captivated by Great Lakes shipping.  Both the lakers and the ocean-going vessels that find their way to land-locked Minnesota through the St. Lawrence.  The ship in the video above (the Roger Blough) is my favorite laker - a very unique ship.

A few years ago I thought Hey we are going to see those tall ships.  Ha Ha  It was 3 or 4 months early and I checked on getting a hotel room reserved.  I was thinking one of them right down there.  Have stayed at them before.  Ha Ha again.  I think the rooms were $400 a night or close to that with a 2 or 3 night stay.  Even in Two Harbors rooms were unreal.  Then you have to drive to Duluth and find a parking spot.  That program went tits up.   :sleazy:   I think we had a nice campfire at home instead.  I would love to go see them though.

We were in Duluth & up at the Thompson Hill rest area when the 1st tall ship came in 2 years ago. :happy1: I was  at how busy it was already & read later that they were expecting ~ 300,000 people in town that weekend. Was  to see the start of it but that's way too many people for us these days. :tut:

Ya me too.  Until I saw that I didn't think it would happen.  Looks like he just squeezed the sailboat out.  The ship was turning in from that direction so they must have almost touched or did touch.

I think the ship has dibs on the sailboat cuz it is less maneuverable.
