Plenty time to plant Winter Rye.  You will get a great plot for fall eats and it will green up early next spring for fresh greens.

Put in the winter rye and  Dwarf essox rape. You will have a nice green plot into gun season. We have planted that as late as the 2nd weekend in September. Worth a shot.

If you want the alfalfa to overwinter it's probably a little late. Likely won't be enough time to develop good root stocks to overwinter. Looks like it's sheltered so that would help but it's no guarantee if it gets too cold and snow cover is light. Nice looking soil BTW!  :happy1:

You could try seeding it in late october so that it will not germ until next spring. Has any one tried that yet? I have heard of it.

If you cant find winter rye use winter wheat.   Rye is preferred though.   Use the entire bag.

Plant winter wheat,  spray it in the spring and then plant alfalfa into the dead wheat.

You will have something green this fall and it will actually slow down new weed growth because of how fast it grows.

Winter rye is planted around this time through early fall.  It can be broadcast and germinates easily and quickly.  Soon you have nice green shoots that deer just love.  It will continue to grow (unless mowed flat by deer) until it freezes.  It remains dormant throughout the winter but starts to green up early in spring giving deer an early source of fresh greens.  You could plant alfalfa Later in spring and it will grow well under the cover of the rye. The rye heads out like oats and can be left to reseed some for the fall.  Then it's done and your alfalfa can take over.  I have had a tough time with alfalfa as it tends to die out in a few years.  Good luck.

Planted winter rye a week ago and up and 6" of green. mixed in a little radish and they are just starting to show. This time of year winter rye is a good last minute go to crop. Had 39 degrees this am so maybe get rid of some of these knats that have been so thick of late..
