Once again the MN DNR is considering closing 90% of the lakes for public use in and around the metro area during the ice fishing season. The DNR teamed up with DEA and other local drug task force agencies to try and conquer the meth epidemic.
In recent years studies have shown that chemicals used in the process of creating methamphetamines have been found in our lakes. Portable meth labs have been set up inside fish houses and when the perpetrators are finished making their meth they have been dumping the used chemicals into our lakes.
The DNR have tested several thousand fish across the metro area and have found these chemicals are affecting the health of the fish where chemicals are abundant in a way not seen before. Upon netting thousands of fish for testing the DNR concluded almost immediately it was chemicals used to make meth as most of the fish were missing teeth and wearing NASCAR hats.
