Steve-o,that was my first thought, the "muder hornet",mever seen such a giant bee, sent this pic to a entomologist friend, she said it's a cicada killer also called a solitary wasp, nasty critter just to be wary of but they eat other insects, just hope I don't have a nest of them nearby.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the population of cicada killer wasps peaks to match the emergence of 17-year cycle of the Brood X cicada.

Cicada Killers: The Asian Giant Hornet Look-alike

One way to tell the difference between a cicada killer and Asian giant hornet is by the colored stripes on their abdomen. Cicada killers have yellow stripes that are uneven and jagged in some places. The stripes on the Asian giant hornet are darker, usually orange or brown, and they are smoother across the abdomen.

Looking at these critters I think the cicada killer and the solitery wasp are two different species, need my bug gal to clarify, either way I don't want either hanging a hat at my place.
