Many years ago I was living/working in Alaska,on my off days I was always hunting or fishing depending on the season, most often in early fall whilst waterfowl hunting just outside of the anchorage international airport right on the cook inlet when the tide was out, pass shooting ducks, every once in a while I would wing a bird and watch it sail off out in to the sea,my trusty retriever would ignor my commands " no bird"with his look of" I'll get it dad" it was a scary situation when it occured as many times during low tide I would encounter Beluga whales so close to the tidal mud flat edge I was sitting on I would get the spray from  they're "blow hole" and smell they're fishy breath, every once in a while further out from shore we would see orcha's breeching,it was always in the back of my mind when taking shot's that wouldn't send a bird out to the open sea, would be helpless watching my pup get eaten.

I've herd duck hunter's in Louisiana have lost dogs to gator's in those timber duck shoots over the years, how agonizing would that be?

I'm sure they have.  I watched a gator hunting show a few years ago and they had their lab jump off the boat and swim for a few minutes and then got him back in the boat.  They used him as bait to get the gators close.  I didn't really like that approach.

I've seen coyote hunter's use dog's as a decoy out west as well, gator hunter's that use a dog for bait are full blowin tards in my book
