I would rather have my labs and cat in bed with me than a turtle.

When we were kids my cousin Mark and I managed to catch one and we kept it for the summer in a huge old cattle watering tank. We tipped one end up so it could go on "shore". We fed it minnows and tadpoles all summer and took it back to the creek in the early fall. Damn lucky neither one of us lost any appendages to old Snappy.

Being Catholic.....When I was growing up we couldn't eat meat on any Friday. So we ate fish, snapping turtle and frog legs. My whole family has eaten turtle. My wife's family did the same. Her dad bought them by the lb from people. That all changed when the DNR made it illegal to get them until the end of June. They really are good eating.  :pouty:  :pouty:

When I was in college a lot of restaurants in and around St Cloud served snapping turtle, especially during lent. I liked the taste.

Wow.  Never heard the turtle/Lent thing.

You learn more here on accident than you do most other places on purpose.  :happy1:

I knew some brave fellas in the Avon area that would go out on super thin ice. When they spotted a turtle, they would make a hole quick and spear them. Not sure if that is still legal, honestly I'm not 100 percent sure it was legal back then.

My dad had a friend he used to work with at the Burlington northern railroad shop in Waite park back in the day that used to do that Roony.

They concentrated on the north end of the lake because the sun would hot these the most come spring.

One of his nephews I worked with also did it occasionally. We have a turtle trap at the cabin we put out occasionally, didn't get any this past summer.

There was a lake just north of us when we trolled it, these turtles would be around, they had heads the size of baseballs.

I worked at Coborn's Liquor in Waite Park in the early 70's, got to know people that worked at that shop. Coborn's was still small back then.
