Welder question

Do any of you guys that have welders in your garages have a GFI 30 or 50 amp breaker installed for your outlet. And if so, do you experience any nuisance tripping while welding?

It was done about 14 years ago and I plead the 5th.

Actually I never even gave a thought to a GFI on a welder circuit.  It is only the one outlet and is only turned on when in use.

Ours is the same way, LPS, & might've even been installed by the same guy.

Why would ther be a GFO in a garage when it should be 1 outlet to the breaker for the welder

Mine is not on a GFI either. I did all the electrical here and it was inspected. That was in 2009 I think.

All of my other circuits do have GFI, just not the welding circuit.

Cooperman, I put in a 120v 30 amp breaker for the camper inside of my garage and it failed inspection. I was told by the elect. inspector I need to have a GFI breaker for it even tho it's inside the building. If yours is getting inspected I would venture a guess your welder will need a GFI breaker also. To pass inspections now ALL circuits, (plug-ins) must have a GFI on the first plug from breaker box. AND they have to be child-proof if they're less than 60" or 72" (I think) from the floor. Learned that one the hard way. Anyone need 18 Non-child-proof GFI plug-ins? I gots some. Hope that helps.

I am guessing that the code has changed since mine was inspected. I will have to look. That could make it interesting when\if I finally get around to having the final inspection done on our big garage. I had the rough in inspection done 6-7 years ago and then we just worked here and there on the insulation and sheetrock. I still have the 2 outside outlets to do yet. At least the outlets are GFCI protected and are the tamper proof already. It would just be the welder outlet that would be a concern. I will have to take a look at the code again.

Thanks markn, that is what I’m finding also, it is code now. The concern I have is I’ve read when these GFI breakers are used for welders they can be susceptible to nuisance tripping and or failure in some cases.

Ya, when I pulled the permit for the big garage it was not required to have GFCI. But I have not had final done on that building yet. Guess I will find out when that time comes. Guess if I need it I just won't be able to weld underwater anymore.
