Early anterless and the youth season were a 1/3rd of what we expected. The rifle season, we have pulled higher numbers than last year, and still going strong. Large buck numbers are high, anid fawn kills are low compared to previous year stats.

Sorry I've been MIA..... this a busy time of year for me with processing.

That is a professional looking operation HD.  Is it a regular butcher shop that does beef and pork during the year?

Where are you located?

I wonder if there were more big bucks because there were fewer doe tags.  For guys that want to put venison in the freezer, they couldn't shoot that first doe that came by.

Its also interesting that your rifle season numbers are up given that Sunday's wind caused lots of hunters to hang it up early.

We are located East Central. The wind didn't seem to have any effect on the hunters harvesting deer. After pulling a 14 hour day we're finally caught up with the skinning. We were staying even with the cutters, but now they're blacked up.  ;)

LPS, we only do a few cows & pigs. Mostly just for locals, not full time.

I grew up in Luverne where there are lots of hogs and beef so butcher shops are everywhere.  Up here not near as much livestock so the nearest butcher shop is Roseau that is about 65 miles from my house.  Pretty inconvenient.

Seems like my butcher and other shops I talked to are having a real hard time getting cutters in to help. Some are only taking in trimmings because they don't have the help to handle doing whole deer.  And folks might want to check with their butcher if there taking in any deer from the CWD zones before you bring them in, most aren't.

Minnesota deer harvest down double-digits
After the slowest start to season since 2014, weather could spur the lowest harvest in 40 years.

DULUTH — The first reports from the 2022 Minnesota firearms deer season looked bleak as of Wednesday, with statewide registrations down 19% from last year over opening weekend. But dig a little deeper and the numbers look even worse.

In the 100-numbered deer permit areas that include all of Northeastern Minnesota, the opening weekend harvest was down 21% from last year and 37% from the five year average, according to [the DNR]. And realize that’s a pretty low five-year average to compare against, way down from say 15 years ago.

In the 200-series area — which covers all of northwestern, western and central Minnesota — the weekend harvest was down 19% from last year and 25% from the five-year average.

The 300-series areas in southeastern Minnesota saw a decline of 19% from last year and 28% from the five-year average.

Barb Keller, big game program leader for the Minnesota DNR, said this is the lowest opening weekend harvest since 2014, which came after the Polar Vortex winter of 2013-2014 that was unusually cold and snowy across the Midwest and which caused significant deer mortality.

Firearms deer hunting license sales in Minnesota were down 2% through the Monday after opening weekend, according to data from the DNR.

Neither is likely to happen given the constant direction the wind blows in the state.

We haven't had an issue with help this year. All of our employees have returned for another year. We are busier than last year, and I think that has to do with some processors shutting down. I do most of the skinning, then head to the cutting/grinding tables when we get caught up. We do 75 to 85 per day. Our coolers will only hold around 250.

The only lull I had was on Tuesday morning before going to vote, and I whacked 2
