I went up today and want to preface my report by saying it was a leisurly trip w/my son whereby we did quite well. The numbers are only 8 fish but all were jumbos w/the exception of one and were caught in a 2 1/2hr span. I had some auger issues, no scooper so there wasn't a concerted effort or lots of moving around.
Went out of Liberty Beach's access and all the roads are in less than desireable condition. They've been well plowed but have just been beaten up and I suggest following them on the sides in the snow until you need to cross a heave or on the bridges. I used a wheeler and didn't find any snow too deep.
I, too, would say that if the bite is going to pick up, it's got to be soon. We were in the mud, in 31' and had snipers for the most part. Some resident dinks around but for the most part, when they came thru, they bit. They really seemed to be on the move rather than hanging around and being finicky.
They definitely looked at the offering but generally took it well vs. light biting.
Minnows seemed to be invisible but waxies were the choice of bait, today. Only caught them jigging and never on a deadstick w/waxies?? They'd come and look at the deadstick w/waxies but never "nibbled" at it to say the least.
I also noticed the get more active when you pound the offering off the bottom and even when you leave it on the bottom. Some chased it up the column but not too far. Otherwise, 3-4" off the bottom was the zone for today.
I'd have liked to have been there at 7am and fished until 4-4:30 but we were reeled up by 2:45.
I think the trip is worth it as a longer day and being mobile could land you a good bucket of fish.
Still plenty of ice...had the auger head burried to get thru. Good luck out there.

We all have three memorable trips in our lives...the first one, the last one and the next one.

i went out of liberty beach thursday as well.  road is in rough shape so as long as you stay on the snow we were ok.  fished out on 3 mile and did well.  drilled quite a few holes and marked fish in every hole but all the fish we caught only came out of maybe 6 of the holes...stay on the move and you will find the fish that are hungry.
