Hello all-  I am considering buying a smoker.  I have never tried smoking anything and do most of cooking on a weber grill.  I was wondering if anybody has any thoughts on which smoker to buy.  Also if you have any idea on a price range, that would be great.  Thanks

I've got a Brinkmann Smoke & Grill charcoal smoker.  I'm not an experienced smoker, but I do like it!   If I had to choose, I believe I'd go with an electric smoker only because I would think it would be easier to control the heat. 

With the charcoal smoker-at least for a novice such as myself, it can be a bit challenging.  Yet nothing I couldn't learn to do over time.  It's not rocket science by any means!   :whistling:

charbroil  makes a professional smoker . it is sold at  menards  and fairly cheap . you can use  wood or charcoal !!  you can countrol the heat great with it too  by moving the dampner 's .  good luck .  :chef: :chef: :chef: :chef: :chef: :chef:  p.s i think it is a charbroil.  just go to menards  and check it out !!  it has an offset firebox.

I'm planiing on building the smokehouse in the above mentioned post.  It says not to use a galvanized piece of metal for the roof.  Does anybody have any ideas on what to use, and where to get it??

you can use  wood
 isuspect itis a cold smoke house . most of them made in the south are of wood

After looking at the picture...it looks like wood up there.  Maybe tongue & groove would be the way to go.  Eventually it'll seal up with the smoke residue (whatever it's called-the sticky black/brown stuff caused from smoking). 

I might have to make one of these someday!  It looks kinda like an outhouse!  :ROTFLMAO:

you just going to put plywood under the shingles??  Do you think that the shingles would have any affect on the meat inside the smoker??

that's why I'd go with cedar shingles-you won't need that many (cuz they are expensive).  With reg. shingles I'd worry about the asphalt bleeding and dripping on my food-not sure of any possible chemical reaction you may get-don't want to find out the hard way either!

just my 2 cents  (thinkin old school thinking there-cedar vs asphalt or fiberglass shingles)

well fellas ....  i do believe  thhisnis a cold smoking  operation. i donot think anything isgoing t drip on your food. these smokehouse  are really not designed to hot smoke anything !! i have been around a many  smoke houses from  here  to texas  and back again , most of them have a regular roof,  there are dozens  and dozens  of plans  . i do not think there really is an exact science on building one like we all want to use. in the southeast   they use barn type structures
tosmoke  hams  bacon  and the likes . 
    for i am no expert  , this is  only what i have seen  andbeen around.  good luck    :cowboy: :chef: :chef: :chef: :chef: :chef: :cowboy:

I guess I was more worried about the scent of the asphalt shingle giving the meat a foul taste.

Use a steel stove pipe instead of galvan... pipe you can get them at the man store (Fleet farm) or menards.
P.s. Home depot's price on cedar is a bit more than menards and they will do the meat and beat by 10% if you ask

That smoker is pretty close to what I want to make,,,,,except I want Elc. not Gas,,,,or wood.
