I heard today that the fire has jumped up to 12,000 acres and is out of control......

That fire took off in one grand hurry, and the wind direction threw a curveball into all of the planning that had been done since the blowdown.

Basically the fire snuck in behind the controlled burns that were planned to protect structures along the Gunflint, and now when the wind shifts westerly they could have even more problems.

I see it this way ........ if they would of been able to go in there when all those trees were blown down and logged it they wouldnt be haveing all these problems with fires ...... you can thank the tree huggers for that also this is mother nature's way of rebuilding herself ........ out with the old and in with the new..... just my 2 cents worth

It is really a pity that the men that spend our tax dollars do not listen!!! The children in Grand Marais knew that a big fire was coming sooner or later.. What I think is really apalling is, we all did too.. We didn't push it though.. We were just good citizens,, kept our mouths shut and thought that "our" men in government would take care of it.. We don't give the money that is needed to be recognized, like some other groups..  Here is an example at how well the gov't takes care of an issue without a little dough re mi,, we should learn from it.. I am as guilty as any, but by God no longer!! It's time for us all to stand up and say and do what we think is right!!!!!!!   QG

I agree, but It seems that COMMON SENSE has taken a back seat to politics and the environmentalists in this country.  It ain't getting any better in the future either. In most cases the Forrest Service has it's hands tied by the environmental groups that won't let them do their jobs. ::banghead:: Much of the downed timber from the 1999 Blow Down could have been removed if not for the environmental groups protesting it.

The "treehuggers" got exactly what they wanted.. They wanted no human interference with the blow down of 1999.. Well those trees are now burning and burning hot!! Now that it has started I hope it burns and cleans the forest up,, it needs it... I wonder if the same "treehuggers" will enjoy the new look and the panoramic views??  I can see them now trying to find a tree to hide behind while releiving themselves or stopping for lunch at a charred campsite.. I bet they won't even go to the BWCA anymore, and that may be a blessing in its self.. QG

That's a very sad read SMG. My heart goes out to all those poor people along the Gunflint Trail. I've had a soft spot in my head for the Way of the Wilderness Outfitter's ever since my first trip up the Gunflint Trail as a callow youth of 20 years. Rof and Gail Skrein owned it then. My love affair with the BWCA started then and there and it has never waivered. The current owner is a good egg too. I'm embarrased cuz I can't remember his name.(Having a senior moment) Not sure but I think his last name might be Darling. Does anybody know if he is OK? Did he lose his place to the fire? I sure hope not. QuillGordon you hit the nail on the head! I hope all the "granola bar chewer's" in their LL Bean outfits are happy! Their shortsided view of how the blowdown should be handled has caused untold human suffering and loss of property. Will they ever learn? Probably not, sad to say. I wish there was something I could do to help. They probably don't want any "Auld Pharts" like me volunteering though. May God bless and keep all those who live along the Gunflint Trail.  And for the "granola chewer's"... ::50cal:: DIRTBALL2 ;)
