My Barretta AL 391 has its plug installed as it comes from the manufacturer.
The User Manual states that it should be removed only by a gunsmith.
Is this true, or can I safely remove it?  If so, how would I go about it?

You don't need a gunsmith. I removed the plug from my AL 390 (gives you 4 shots total rather than 3) myself. This was about 10 years ago, so I don't recall exactly how I did it. I thought it was explained in the owner's manual.
