Just wondering what kind of cool, weird, crazy, unbelievable, awesome things others have seen while sitting in their deer stands.

I have seen eagles take grouse and rabbits. Had birds land on my rifle barrel. Watched a young black bear roll around in the snow. Watched a beaver knawing at a tree. Other than that not much.

Our hunting party has seen lots of critters.  Fisher, bull moose, timber wolves, wolverine, rabbits, black bear cubs, squirrels, owls, wood peckers, beaver, ravens, eagles, snow geese and canadian geese (flying over), thats about all I can think of off the top of my head.

Eagles, foxes, owls, many different kinds of wood peckers, grouse, a gazillion squirles, 2 gazillion chickadees, flocks of geese, too many crows (unfortunatly), and once I heard a pack of wolves/coyotes.

Oh yeah and I've seen deer.   ;D

All types of game, but the strangest thing was about 10 years ago.

I hunt on private property and had a neighbor lady dressed in a brown leather coat with white and brown gloves and hat jogging up the trail to my stand, I first noticed her about a hundred yards away and thought right away that it was a deer, as she got closer, i saw her as plain as day. i argued with myself if i should fire a slug in the opposite direction just to teach her a lesson, I held back and climbed out of my stand to confront her. I told her she could very easily be mistaken for a deer running through the woods and that many idiot hunters will shoot at any sound or movement in the woods.

After that incident, her entire family wears blaze orange in there yards and even to check the mail. I think I freaked her out just enough to keep her safe in the future.

Good job Spinach  No one will ever Know but you could have saved a human life by that action. And by making this story public, possibly how many more?

Ive seen the usual, fischers, cranes, grouse a couple of beautiful black wolves...but the strangest was...mid afternoon, dead quiet, no wind, Im on the edge of a large 2 x 5 mile clear cut up on the edge in a big stand of pines in the old "wolf stand" and I hear a helicopter a few miles away....it soon apears above the trees on the far side of the clear cut...it stops...turns and is pointed in my direction...it goes into silent mode, quiet as beat hell, an Apache Attack copter i think,(the big thin ones with the wings and rockets mounted on em) and B-lines straight at me dropping into the clearcut bowl, then swooping up over my stand of pines so close I could see the pilots helmet and mask!  went into "noisy mode" again and was goooone...First I was a bit annoyed...but then I laughed to myself, picturing the guys in the copter spotin me on the infared saying "watch this...we'll scare the be-juses out of this dude!"  Reeeal funny guys...!  They must've been "training" out of Fort Ripley which is on the way up to where we hunt in the Paul Bunyan St. Forest...Thought I was in a damn movie for a moment!  I like seein the critters much, much more....            -thunderpout 8)

Nothing too exciting. Deer, 1 wolf, 1 unidentifed animal....that was weird I guess. It was near taylors falls and was shorter than a deer but biggger than a coyote. It just floated through the woods fast and swift. It was dark. No clue what it was. Nothing else too exciting. Had a few hawks/owls try to land on my head...scary.

I'll keep thinking......

A couple of years ago while turkey hunting, my daughter (12) and I were just sitting in front of a big tree with little "cover up" because we were in a hurry and didn't have time to get to a ground blind.  About 15 minutes after we sat down, a small red fox came running up and stopped about 15 feet away from us.  It actually kept walking toward us, had no clue we were there, and came within about 2 feet of us; I could have reached out with the barrel of my gun and touched it.  It was pretty exciting but a little scary too because we were basically face to face with it.  But we didn't want to spook it so we just sat as still as we could and it eventually just walked away.  I looked at my daughter sitting next to me - her eyes were pretty huge!

I can immagine the DNR report now "Woman kills fox with flash on camera."  That thing would have gone into cardiac arrest if you snapped a photo.  Or maybe it would have thought God was calling it into the light.  YIKE!  Then it would have landed in your lap.  Yeah its a good thing you didn't try that.

  • The brothers with my 2006 buck.
Oh now everyone is so cuddly and warm in this post. Things are about to change!!! I am sure I am not the only one to get to my deer stand and find the wind has blown it to smithereens, or to find that some butt face took my tree pegs. But this one may be the top of all tops.  When I was 16 I worked my tail off on an awesome stand. 6x6 flip over top if it rains, cammo sidewalls... The works! I got to my hunting spot in the pitch black; my mind was racing with all the thoughts of being there, forgetting about life and seeing a monster. I walked with my brother John half way and we parted to our separate stands. I walked a bit farther and headed down the trail into the woods to my pride and joy -- the stand I worked so hard on. I got about 10 yards away when I heard whispers. FREEKED ME OUT!!! Much to my surprise there was a 35-year-old drunk (and still drinking) bearded man and his little Asain girlfriend smoking pot in my stand!!! That was not the half of it. They both had guns, were pissed because one of their buddies told them to sit there, and did not want to leave MY stand! They left all right! I used words that would have made my mother disown me! I felt the worse I think a 16 year old could have felt. The stomped away yelling and swearing at me for about 20 minutes!!! The happy ending is that in there ranting they spooked a doe right to me and I shot her b4 they were out of sight!!! I have seen a bunch of awesome thing at the deer stand - friends and family shoot deer, animals of all sorts, and monster bucks, b but never has the adrenalin been pumping quite like that!!

This wasn't well on stand but still hunting. As I was slowly moving through the woods a shot goes off not fare from meso i stops and waits incase a deer came by. Pretty soon another shot and another. I figure the guy must be tring to finish one off, well another shot goes off and i hear him reload. In all he shot 7 or 8 times and finaly it got quit so I went over to see what was going on.Thinking now he might be hurt and is trying to signal for help. As I aproach the area i see this guy setting in a pine tree and goes over and ask him what all the shooting was. He " oh there were some limbs in my way so i was shooting them off as i climbed." OOOK i'm going out that way and will yell every now and then and make a lot of noise so you know where I am. Belief me it didn't take me long to get out of the area.

This one happened to my neighbor Mike but it is good enough to post. He hunts public land and some years ago he dropped a doe right away in the morning about 50 yards from his stand. About a half hour later some guy walking through comes upon it and drew his gun as if to shoot but then walked up to it and looked around but not up at Mike. He lifted its leg to see if it was really a doe and then lit up a cigarette, walked aroud the deer Then held his gun up in the air and touched off a round. After that he let out a big YAAAH HOOOO in the direction he thought his buddies were.  When this goof pulled out an 8 inch Buck knife then Mike finally said Are you going to gut that for me? He sheepishly said sorry and mumbled something else then high tailed it out of there.

When bow hunting a few years ago, a couple came into the woods nearby on an ATV. They unpacked a blanket and started to remove clothing, not aware of my postion just a few yards off the trail. The devil on my left shoulder told me to watch what was about to unfold, while the angel on my right shoulder told me to say something. The angel won out and I coughed, and the people started to get dressed rather quickly. The got on the ATV and took off still not knowing where I was. After they left I almost fell out of my stand laughing.
It's not the story, but he who tells it.

I think about this every time I am in the woods since I first read this! I can't believe that guy. Every time I hear a shot when i'm out that is close and I don't know who it is I say to myself...They are shooting at something and it is probably headed toward the ground. Makes me nervous with all that gun fire going on sometimes. And then there is this guy shooting at branches! No brains! ???

Last Sunday morning I made it to my stand, hoping to take a little nap since I had a little too much fun the night before.  As I sat there I continued to hear the sound of chomping wood.  This went on for over an hour.  My stand is next to a beaver infested creek so I assumed that a beaver was doing what they do.  Everytime I heard it I would stick my head out the window to try to see the beaver in action.  Once I did this the sound seemed to be coming from a different direction until I realized that it was coming from in my stand.  When I determined that it was in my stand I quickly changed from it being a beaver to a mouse.  Mice in general do not scare me, but being stuck in a deer stand with it, I was not happy.  I knew that it was above my head, on a large shelf, but I was too afraid to look.  Thankfully I had my digital camera with me, so I snapped some pics above my head.   No mouse!!!  What then???  I waited a little bit longer and the culprit caim climbing out and it was the biggest little black beetle I have ever seen.  Who knew a beetle could make so much noise.  I don't hunt much so this is the only story I have.   Check out the beetle below.

Two years ago I saw a Mountain Lion (Southern Iowa).  I've seen raccoon, skunks, beavers...  Last year I saw a bit 8ptr but it was actually a 4 ptr because the entire right side of his rack was missing b/c he'd just gotten into a fight...

I didn't see this (I was driving the wheeler) but my neighbor did as I went by his stand.

This is why we needed the boat.

This is what he saw on the return trip.
