Lake Vermilion
Weekly Fishing Report
May 15th, 2006

Despite the nasty weather Saturday, walleyes were very cooperative. Many limits were reported both days.
Early and late in the day walleyes were coming out of 8 to 15 feet of water. During the day fish were reported coming from 18 to 35 feet of water.
These deeper fish were settled along breaks near good low light fishing areas. Minnows out fished leeches and crawlers by far, but a few anglers did score with them. Larger minnows also seemed to help ?the bite?.
Darker colored jigs worked better with the cloud cover. On average about every 5-6 fish had to go back for either being to small or in the slot.
Northern and perch were also mixed in with the walleyes. Muskies are paired up cruising the shallows looking for nesting areas, and the crappie bite has been on hold due to the weather conditions.
All in all we would give this opener a solid A for both quantity and quality of fish.
Good Luck!

Last week, (June 1st thru June 6th) was a tought week.  Cloudless skies, hot temps in the 80's with no wind made for some tough fishing.  Smaller walleyes were cooperative, evenings proved best.   Larger fish were down deep, 40 feet +.  Sunday's wind made it all the more difficult to find the bottom.  We did manage a meager shorelunch.

Water temps ranged from 69.8 to 71.4, mainly in Big Bay.  We witnessed gulls flocking in areas where we marked clouds on the bottom around 20 feet, I'm guessing the beginnings of the mayfly hatch.  Seems early, but the water sure was warm.  The walleyes should be primed and ready when the bugs start hatching.

Smallies were ferocious protecting there nest.
