Ice conditions remain good on both Crow Lake and Lake of the Woods. Fisherman are venturing out in pickup trucks and we have received no reports of any on ice incidents. As always we remind everyone use common sense when traveling the lake with a vehicle.
With the last couple of days being warmer the fish are beginning to co-operate a little more. Lake trout react to the weather changes and generally nice days mean more productive days. The last couple of days fishing between thirty-five and fifty feet has been a good bet for finding active fish. White tube jigs were a good bet and using one with a rattle was even better. Good solid hits came on the tube but faster baits like the buzzbomb seemed to initiate more bumps. Look for the fish off points and saddles that come out of deeper water. The trout seem to travel to these spots to feed on the bait that moves into these areas.
Well news of the crappie bite has spread like wildfire and we are seeing more people on the ice. Still good action but the fish are starting to see more pressure. Regardless most people are having no problem catching their limit. Thirty six to forty feet of water remains a good target depth. Reports of fish being caught at Hay Island are coming in but this can change day to day. Town has been productive and remains popular. As the season progresses we should see more crappies move into Stevens Bay. Small jigs with half a minnow seemed to get the finicky biters to bite. With the water somewhat stained, glow has been our goto on any presentation. The weather once again is going to turn cold so we will update in the next couple of days what it has done to the bite. Have fun on the ice and remember to be safe.
