Beagle.  "Buddy" is much like the Beagle in my avatar.  He LOVES to get up in your face.  We use him for friendship, guard dog and laughs.  He comes from a local breeder who breeds Beagles for hunting.  When he was told we were going to make Buddy into a housedog-he almost didn't sell him to us.  But he was convinced otherwise and he's been in our family now for 2 yrs.

He lets us know when someone is in the neighborhood at night (not just driving by), he's great with kids of all ages, and when you say "I Love You" to him, he'll howl (like Beagles do) right back at you 90% of the time!  He knows a few tricks-roll over, play dead, sit, heal and beg-as if he needed to be taught that.

10 year old Black Lab. He loves to duck hunt . He's starting to slow down so I don't let him go on the long retrieves anymore . Then he looks disgusted with me . He grouse and pheasant hunts too, but when he gets tired he's at my heels . He'll play fetch off the dock for hours but will not jump off the end.

4 yr old male Vizsla...

Got him for pheasant and grouse hunting and he does a good job at that. In the off-season he seems to think his job is to make sure everything is ok while you are doing your business in the bathroom. They call them "velcro" dogs and it is very fitting. He is around me more than my shadow most days.

Buzz is my 2.5 yo Golden Retreiver.
Basically #1 , he is my buddy.  He goes with me to my shop (have a kennel there) or is under my desk, or riding around in the truck with me if not too hot in the topper or below zero.
#2 he is to find downed birds while hunting.  1st is ducks and geese.  Then upland birds.

I have an 11 month old yellow lab, Benelli.  I have grown up with labs and I just think they are the greatest companion.  I have been training her since I got her 9 months ago.  She has only been grouse hunting a handfull of times but she is really developing into a great bird dog.  I can't wait to get her back in the woods this fall!!  Grouse and pheasant.  NOw that I have a good dog, I think it will be time to get into waterfowl as well. :fudd:

14 year old yellow lab who is trying to convince herself that she is 10... no more hunting for her.  She was a great upland dog in her day though... did yomen's work in the duck blind.

3 year old black lab that is priarily used on pheasant.  She can duck hunt but we generally use my buddies dog the few times I still get out.  His dog is out of my yellow so it's neat hunting over her.   I scrubbed my black from a pro's field trial program as she didn't quite have what it takes to be competitive.

1 1/2 year old American Cocker Spaniel.  Bred form one of a handful of breeders still producing hunting Cockers.  Needed to go to PA to get him and took me 5 years of trying.  I'm hoping he does well in the grose woods, I didn't move as many birds as I'd hoped with him as the population seemed to take a dive around Cass Lake last year.  I'm hoping this will be his break out year.  He did get some birds up in SoDak when we were out pheasant hunting too.

Good Luck!

Is that an award that the AKC gives out?

How do dogs get one?

Do you (they) get the type of awards from going to shows?

As you can tell, I don't know much about this stuff.

Overview of the Canine Good Citizen Test

Your dog must appear for the test well groomed. The collar may not be a pinch collar, electric collar, or similar correction collar. You will provide the examiner with a brush to help demonstrate your dog's tolerance for being handled by a stranger. The dog must allow the examiner to brush it and to examine its body. The test also includes the dog sitting calmly while a stranger pets it.

Your dog must be comfortable with the approach of a friendly stranger. The examiner will approach you and shake hands. Your dog should accept the approach calmly, without shyness or aggression. A friendly dog can fail this by approaching with too much enthusiasm. A polite dog waits for permission before touching a stranger.

Your dog must be able to walk without pulling on its leash. A formal heel is not required. Your dog must be able to walk through a crowd of people. Often the people will be doing all the things people do - opening umbrellas, walking on crutches, swinging a sweater, crossing suddenly in front of the dog. Your dog should not pull at the leash, jump at the people, or show either fear or aggression.

The examiner will ask you to have the dog sit and lie down on command. You will be asked to tell the dog to stay, then to step away from the dog, about twenty-five feet or so and call the dog. The dog should stay until called, and come when called. Unlike formal obedience, repeating a command is allowed.

An ability to regain self-control after excitement is an important part of the test. The examiner will have you play with the dog briefly then calm it. The dog should calm quickly.

Your dog must allow the approach of person with a strange dog. Typically, the other person will approach with a leashed dog and shake your hand. Showing aggression, fearfulness, or even excessive friendliness is grounds for failure.

Your dog must remain calm if you leave it briefly, (I think its three minutes). You will secure the dog to some object as directed by the examiner, and go out of sight of the dog. The dog may move around but it must not whine, bark, pull or otherwise show distress. An important point to note is that the dog is not left alone but is being left under the indirect supervision of a stranger. You should try to interact with the examiner so the dog is aware that you are not abandoning it, but the examiner will not correct or otherwise soothe the dog.

HOOKIE

This is what i was looking for

Found it on the AKC site, like the others

Levels of Competition

There are three levels of competition in obedience:

NOVICE - For the dog just getting started in obedience. Exercises include:
o Heel on Leash and Figure Eight - show whether the dog has leamed to watch its handler and adjust its pace to stay with the handler.
o Heel Free - done off leash.
o Stand for Examination - is of great benefit when the dog needs hands-on care by a veterinarian.
o Recall - provides the handler with the ability to call the dog and get an immediate response at all times.
o Long Sit (1 minute) - allows the handler to have control of the dog when visitors come to the home.
o Long Down (3 minutes) - dog must remain in a down position.

OPEN - The second level includes more complicated exercises, which teach the dog to do a variety of tasks and to follow commands either by voice or signal. Exercises include:
o Heel Free and Figure Eight - Same as Novice, but off leash.
o Drop on Recall - can be a lifesaving command for a dog, since it gives the handler control in poten-tially dangerous situations.
          o Retrieve on Flat
          o Retrieve Over High Jump
          o Broad Jump
o Long Sit (3 minutes) - similar to the long sit in Novice, but the position must be held for a longer period of time with the handler out of the dog's sight.
o Long Down (5 minutes) - dog must remain in a down position.

UTILITY - The third and highest level of obedience competition. Exercises include:
o Signal Exercise - shows the dog's ability to under-stand and correctly respond to the handler's signal to stand, stay, down, sit and come. No voice com-mands are given; only hand signals are allowed.
o Scent Discrimination - shows the dog's ability to find the handler's scent among a pile of articles.
o Directed Retrieve - proves the dog's ability to follow a directional signal to retrieve a glove and promptly return it to the handler.
o Moving Stand and Examination - the dog must heel, stand and stay as the handler moves away. The dog must stay and accept an examination by the judge and return to the handler on command.
o Directed Jumping - the dog must go away from the handler, turn and sit. Then, the dog must clear whichever jump its handler indicates and promptly return to the handler.

Qualifying Performance

A qualifying score indicates that the dog has performed all the required exercises according to AKC Obedience Regulations and justifies the awarding of the obedience title associated with the particular class.

Qualifying Score

A dog receives a qualifying score when it earns more than 50 percent of the points for each exercise, with a total of at least 170 points. A perfect score in any class is 200.

Awards

The following colors must be used for prize ribbons or rosettes in all regular classes, and for the Highest Scoring Dog in the Regular Classes, and for the ribbon or rosette for the dog with the Highest Combined Score in Open B and Utility:

    First Prize - Blue
    Second Prize - Red
    Third Prize - Yellow
    Fourth Prize - White

Highest Scoring Dog In the Regular Classes - Blue and Gold
Highest Combined Score In Open B and Utility - Blue and Green

All dogs that have received a qualifying score in their class receive a dark green ribbon to indicate that they have earned a "leg," or qualifying score toward their title.

I had a golden retriever that I trained for 4H.  We took first place in the state 4H dog show in the "novice" section.  I took him through the local obedience school offered at thru the community education program.  It was ten weeks long.  It is amazing what you can teach a dog.  It takes practice.

Good job N.G.!

Keep up the good work.  You're doing things right though.  Lot's and lot's of obedience in their 1st year... that is the foundation for all future work and the downfall of most dogs and their handlers!  Let us know when he gets that 1st ribbon... maybe a photo will be in order.

I forgot to post of one other dog I own (but she does not live with me)... Nora, a 6 year old black.   She is out of North America's last Triple Champion (field, show and obedience).  It was her mother... in fact her grandmother and great grandmother were Triple Champions too.  I highly doubt we will ever see another as the show people and the field people keep splitting the breed further and further apart.

Good Luck!

I have two chocolate labs. The first one I have came from Montana and she is 1 1/2yrs. old Her first hunt was for pheasent and we were done the first hour with our limit. She comes from great blood lines and her dad is a silver lab. Her first year hunting she retrieved around 200 hundred birds. The second is 3 1/2yrs. old. She was a rescue dog about a month after bringing the pup home. It has taken some work, but she also retrieved around 200 birds this last season and both are top notch in my book. Great family dogs and good companions

 :newhere:

Hi,
We have a GSP we use for pheasent. Great dog, we got him already trained for free from some woman who was giving away several hunting dogs that belonged to a soon to be ex husband.

My husband, (Red) is from VA and had never hunted upland bird until he got here. Didn't take him long to catch bird hunting flu. I, (JBird) started going out on hunts just to watch and take pics. I want to start hunting now too, (Had hoped to start last year but being pregnant sort of squashed that plan.)

In the future I'd like to have my own bird dog. I've done a lot of research and am interested in a few rarer breeds, braque francais and bracco italiano to be specific. Possibly a spinone (sp ?) Does anyone have experience with or knowledge to share about any of those breeds?

Thanks! I'm home with the baby while Red and our son and the dog are out looking for birds. Hopefully they'll bring a few home.

I have a 5yr old Brittany who I got last year "used" from some %&$$* who I think beat her.  After a year of me though, she doesn't mind gun shots, and just this last week figured out that while grouse hunting, she should be IN the woods, not at my heels.  Last fall she did remarkably well for pheasant behind my dad's Chocolate Lab.

Great dog though, loyal as anything I have ever seen, and strangely enough for a brittany, she's pretty much silent(doesnt bark when people come in, etc).  So, it looks like me and brittanies have a good future together.

She was a runt and the last one they had and sold her cheap just to get rid of her.
I dont think they knew she would turn out to be the best hunting dog a pheasant would ever see.

good luck with your brittany

My mother always buys the runt of the litter if possible, and they are always very intelligent and friendly.  (She doesn't hunt.)  This seems true for several different breeds she has bought.

Black Lab, mostly pheasants but we do tangle with a few grouse.

Just to note, the Lab with the pheasants is Koda, my current Black Lab.  The one in my avatar with the porcupine quills is Pete, long gone from the hunting field.

I am working on training my 4 month old GSP for pheasant and grouse.  She's already fairly good at pointing on a pheasant wing and retrieving but I really need to get her out with some live birds and see how things go then.  I've been using Richard Wolters "Gun Dog" training techniques and have had great success so far.  Here's a picture.

I have a yellow lab, Morgan, who will be 2 on the 8th.  He is my best friend and as spoiled as can be!  He goes everywhere with me, he rides in the truck, sits at work all day, and even spends the occasional night at grandpa's.  This sounds cheesy, but, I fell in love with him the moment I found him.  He was rescued from a breading farm that was abusing their animals.  He was going to be put under because of his over bite, He has no handicap because of this, he eats fine and has no problem bringing anything to me.

He LOVES retrieving, the pictures I've attached are him waiting for his favorite toy the "chuck it-flying squirrel" and bringing it back to me. In the summer I can't keep him off the dock at the lake.  There's nothing he likes more than running full speed and jumping off the dock to retrieve his toys.  I'm planning on taking him to the preserve this year to test out the pheasant skills with his best buddy a rotwieler, sounds like an odd combination, but the rot loves retrieving as much as Morgan!

I am a dyed in the wool GSP believer...I have had them for 20 yrs and got away from Spaniels once I found how much easier these are to work with.  Maggie is 6, my 4th GSP, and she is the queen of the house, truck, blind, etc.  I work to support her, she then allows me to live in the house and sleep on the couch.  lmao

I'm a die hard rooster hunter with a touch of grouse and waterfowl in my blood!
I have a yellow lab that hunt's both waterfowl and rooster's.  And then I have a Weimaraner for rooster's and grouse!  I love watching the lab in the water and have a real softspot for the stone cold point's and retrieves the Weim pulls off.  Pics of me with the Weim "Betty" and lab "Jack"!

My dog, er, my Owner, was scrolling thru the net and saw that I had posted a less than professionally positive image of her, ie, on the couch, and threw a FIT.  So, she said, post a new one, or...so, in my defense, here it is.  Be careful what you say, shes reading over my shoulder!!!
