Oh cool OJ.... i cant wait for hunters first ribbon...

I just get all excited about things like this

It was hard going at first with Hunter.. he was being bullheaded along the way a few times.. but you know hes 8 months now and really settling down.. I think it was my mistake, i started him very early with all this.. I think a point is take your time and have fun.. don't make it a chore

Good job N.G.!

Keep up the good work.  You're doing things right though.  Lot's and lot's of obedience in their 1st year... that is the foundation for all future work and the downfall of most dogs and their handlers!  Let us know when he gets that 1st ribbon... maybe a photo will be in order.

I forgot to post of one other dog I own (but she does not live with me)... Nora, a 6 year old black.   She is out of North America's last Triple Champion (field, show and obedience).  It was her mother... in fact her grandmother and great grandmother were Triple Champions too.  I highly doubt we will ever see another as the show people and the field people keep splitting the breed further and further apart.

Good Luck!

Ken

I have a Small Munsterlander,  she is used for everything, Ducks, pheasants, grouse etc etc .  She is truly a one dog show.  Loves to point, flush, retrieve, and is very friendly.  Bascially a lab only 47 lbs vs. 90

That is a cool breed, Ive looked into those and the large version.  Similar to a Setter but more versatile... When you say one dog show what do ya mean? That she does it all?

I have two chocolate labs. The first one I have came from Montana and she is 1 1/2yrs. old Her first hunt was for pheasent and we were done the first hour with our limit. She comes from great blood lines and her dad is a silver lab. Her first year hunting she retrieved around 200 hundred birds. The second is 3 1/2yrs. old. She was a rescue dog about a month after bringing the pup home. It has taken some work, but she also retrieved around 200 birds this last season and both are top notch in my book. Great family dogs and good companions

 :newhere:

Hi,
We have a GSP we use for pheasent. Great dog, we got him already trained for free from some woman who was giving away several hunting dogs that belonged to a soon to be ex husband.

My husband, (Red) is from VA and had never hunted upland bird until he got here. Didn't take him long to catch bird hunting flu. I, (JBird) started going out on hunts just to watch and take pics. I want to start hunting now too, (Had hoped to start last year but being pregnant sort of squashed that plan.)

In the future I'd like to have my own bird dog. I've done a lot of research and am interested in a few rarer breeds, braque francais and bracco italiano to be specific. Possibly a spinone (sp ?) Does anyone have experience with or knowledge to share about any of those breeds?

Thanks! I'm home with the baby while Red and our son and the dog are out looking for birds. Hopefully they'll bring a few home.

We have a 8 year old fox red lab sydney (female) , we ahve a 6 month old chocolate lab bailey (female) and we just got a 8 week old yellow lab bell (female).  We love our labs they are by the best family and hunting dogs.  We had a red setter and she was horrible with kids so we had to have a single lady take her.  I am sure she would have been an awsome pheasant dog.  Sydney is in my avatar pic.

I have a 5yr old Brittany who I got last year "used" from some %&$$* who I think beat her.  After a year of me though, she doesn't mind gun shots, and just this last week figured out that while grouse hunting, she should be IN the woods, not at my heels.  Last fall she did remarkably well for pheasant behind my dad's Chocolate Lab.

Great dog though, loyal as anything I have ever seen, and strangely enough for a brittany, she's pretty much silent(doesnt bark when people come in, etc).  So, it looks like me and brittanies have a good future together.
This is the internet, please remain calm.  I mean you no harm...

I grew up hunting with a Brittany.  :happy1:
She was a runt and the last one they had and sold her cheap just to get rid of her.
I dont think they knew she would turn out to be the best hunting dog a pheasant would ever see.

good luck with your brittany

My mother always buys the runt of the litter if possible, and they are always very intelligent and friendly.  (She doesn't hunt.)  This seems true for several different breeds she has bought.

Black Lab, mostly pheasants but we do tangle with a few grouse.

Just to note, the Lab with the pheasants is Koda, my current Black Lab.  The one in my avatar with the porcupine quills is Pete, long gone from the hunting field.

I am working on training my 4 month old GSP for pheasant and grouse.  She's already fairly good at pointing on a pheasant wing and retrieving but I really need to get her out with some live birds and see how things go then.  I've been using Richard Wolters "Gun Dog" training techniques and have had great success so far.  Here's a picture.

I have a yellow lab, Morgan, who will be 2 on the 8th.  He is my best friend and as spoiled as can be!  He goes everywhere with me, he rides in the truck, sits at work all day, and even spends the occasional night at grandpa's.  This sounds cheesy, but, I fell in love with him the moment I found him.  He was rescued from a breading farm that was abusing their animals.  He was going to be put under because of his over bite, He has no handicap because of this, he eats fine and has no problem bringing anything to me.

He LOVES retrieving, the pictures I've attached are him waiting for his favorite toy the "chuck it-flying squirrel" and bringing it back to me. In the summer I can't keep him off the dock at the lake.  There's nothing he likes more than running full speed and jumping off the dock to retrieve his toys.  I'm planning on taking him to the preserve this year to test out the pheasant skills with his best buddy a rotwieler, sounds like an odd combination, but the rot loves retrieving as much as Morgan!

I am a dyed in the wool GSP believer...I have had them for 20 yrs and got away from Spaniels once I found how much easier these are to work with.  Maggie is 6, my 4th GSP, and she is the queen of the house, truck, blind, etc.  I work to support her, she then allows me to live in the house and sleep on the couch.  lmao

My dog, er, my Owner, was scrolling thru the net and saw that I had posted a less than professionally positive image of her, ie, on the couch, and threw a FIT.  So, she said, post a new one, or...so, in my defense, here it is.  Be careful what you say, shes reading over my shoulder!!!
