I love it when the Roseau's, Warroad's, Greenway's etc. come to St.Paul and rub the big, spoiled recruited suburban and private schools noses in the ice!  My school (Irondale)hasn't been in it since Bjugstad played and a few years after, they had a good run there though!  How can STA be an A team?  They almost looed like a division II college team...     -thunderpout

Is it just me or does anyone else agree that high school hockey is about 100x more entertaining than pro hockey?  I could sit down and watch a couple high school games in a row, but turn on the Wild and I am bored after 5 minutes.

i will watch the wild if there is nothing else on, but i
watch the gophers every time they play. the high
school tourneys are hockey at its best, they play
their butts off for no money.

You are correct sir.  However, I feel they play a little to rough (to put it politely.)  My opinion is that they would have still won without all the "extra efforts."

Rough? Isn't this hockey? When I played high school hockey I got knocked around pretty good. I thought HM actually played pretty clean. I think there is a difference between rough and dirty and they seem to stay pretty clean. A strong team that knows how to use their strength and power to their advantage is a good team. I noticed that Roseau was playing a little dirty the other night and their penalties really hurt them. That may of been frustration but it was getting the best of them.

Rough is one thing but going for the player and not the puck isn't hockey - its fighting/violence.  I saw way too many times where players were getting hit with that being the only intent.  I did also see Roseu doing it too but not until after they were getting banged around a lot.

I really believe HM could have still won with no dirty play but it seemed a bit dirty to me for a high school team who should be nothing but quality players.

Spearing, shots after the whisle, high sticks, elbows, late hits behind the play. That is dirty hockey. Hitting  player before he gets the puck is a penalty, Hitting a player who touched the puck is called finishing your check. Most people when watching a hocley game watch there team. Try watching a game and take your eyes off your team and watch the other team, you will see it's a two way street as far as play goes. There may be a few outstanding moments when a player is checking everyone in sight but that usually only happens on one shift. Ever watch  a womens hockey game? where there is no hitting? ya right

"Rough is one thing but going for the player and not the puck isn't hockey - its fighting/violence."
No it's called checking and it is allowed in men's hockey

I know the difference between fighting and checking and I KNOW I saw a lot of actual fighting.

If the coaches and refs want to let it slide and spectators like to turn a cheek and say it wasn't violence, then thats their choice and opinion.  But I know what I saw and was dissapointed that our elete high school players would resort to such tactics such as checking from behind, high sticks, cross checking and blatnet punching.  Thats not the sport I tuned in to watch.

Checking is rough and it is fine as long as the players are going for the puck.  They shouldn't let their emotions get out of control and they try to "hit" (not check) the other player.

It's just part of the game. I agree that the cheapshots, highsticking, etc.... are not necessary, but emotions of the game always get in the way. Hockey is a rough sport and the players are taught at a young age that they need to be physical or they wont make the cut.

Very few players can be offensive only because they have such great talent (Gretzky, Broten) come to mind, but for the most part, a player has to be physical to compete.

How many other sports can you get into a fight and only get a 5 minute penalty in the box?

Baseball, football and basketball all get automatic suspensions for fighting.

Fighting in hockey is a part of the game......

I'll be the first guy to tell ya fighting and the rough stuff definatley has its place in pro hockey, its a part of hockey.  But its not why I love hockey... the open ice play, the four on four, wide open, olympic style hockey is why I like hockey... but certain situations call for different styles etc.  I'm not a big fan of it in college and especially high school hockey.  To me thats where kids should be learning the skills, not the goonery.  The goonery isnt a skill, its what it is.  Plus, at the high school and college level, there seems to be larger differences in body sizes, especially in college... ya got bantam sized kids goin into corners against nearly pro sized "adults"...usually canadian, 25 year old "kids"  :whistling: I think checking is a part of hockey at all ages, like tackeling in football.  But the goonery stuff, like running guys after plays and other cheap stuff shouldnt be allowed in high school hockey, at least I dont think so...         -thunderpout
