Around 10 years ago a 10 point buck got wacked by a car in front of my farm. The DNR gave me the deer, and I saved the rack. The deer was in full velvet, and the rack has been in the freezer for the 10 years. Last year, my wife was cleaning out the freezer and placed the rack on a table in the garage. She asked me what I was going to do with it, I told her that I wanted to get it mounted on a plaque. She asked me if it was o.k. to have left it out. I told her that it should be fine, cause I thought it would have been freezer dried by then. Well, some of them little black and tan beetles started to naw on one, so I put them back in the freezer.

SO, (yep, I know long story, sorry) The question I have, Is, how do I preserve this rack so the bugs don't eat it, and I can mount it on a plaque?

look on the internet they have books and kits that you can do to save them. I am not sure how to do it myself. They can inject something into them I think but yours might be to old .
If today was perfect. There would be no need for tomorrow.

You can look up more info for it at www.vandykestaxidermy.com but because they have been frozen for so long I would ask one of are MNO taxidermy guys

how bad is the rot on it.. you can get fake velvet put on it or have it freeze dried. i have been told the freeze drying is the best route.

Hunterdown,
Freeze dry is the best route. They are most likely freeze dried to a point after being in the freezer that long but not completely finished. If the damage is not too bad the bug damage can be touched up. Artificial velvet is another option if you so choose. As a precaution they could be soaked for a short period of time in a bug proofer before going back into the freeze dryer. If you wish to have them done give me a shout. I have a quite large machine that will fit any deer rack easily with out splitting the skull plate.

The damage from the bugs ain't to bad, but would show.

And there is no skull plate, cause this was 10 years ago and I didn't know better.
(I hacked um off with a saw)

Where can I get this bug proofer, or should I just give them to you to do?

I check in every other day or so at least. If someone has a particular question I try and help. We are very busy so I don't have the time to sit here for long periods of time. Our dial up connection out in the sticks doesn't help either :banghead: ;D.With the weather change you may see even less of me. I spend every second I can in the woods in the spring. Chasing the turkeys and hunting for mushrooms! :party3: See ya later!
