What are your thoughts? Garmin? Tom Tom? Magellon?

Not looking for a portable, looking for something for my car.

Anyone have suggestions?  Not looking to break the bank, but want something solid.

Which unit do you use?

Is this a clear advantage over mapquest papers???

I would simply buy a portable like a garmin or lowrance that can be used in the field some day.  you can buy the map chips for us travel for them.  I use my lowrance expedition for everything from navigating in the car/boat/wheeler/snowmobile and even in cross country flight.  MOre versital than a TOm Tom I believe and cost about the same.  Good Luck

My wife has a GPS and I hate it.  The only part I like is trying to beat the arrival time it gives me.  Otherwise I don't listen to it at all.  If it tells me to turn and I know I can get there another way I will go the other way.  I think it is much easier to look up an address on a map before I leave.

I have the Garmin Novi.  It is the cheaper one don't remember the number of it at this moment.  I love it!  It will give you turn by turn instructions from start to finish.

NG  don't know about buying maps for German Shorthair Pointers  :whistling: (luv ya).  The one that I just got has the 2008 maps on it already.  I can go to Garmin and down load updated ones in the future and it connects to the computer via a USB cable for updating.

Big_D the main advantage to the GPS over the mapquest thing, which I have used a lot,  is that when you are in the middle of traffic like I was in Boston you do not have to try to read anything, voice prompts tell you when to turn.  If you miss a turn it tells you how to bet back on track as well.  The one that I have simply says "Turn right" where the fancier models will say "Turn right on front street".  The screen shows what street to turn on though and I have not had an issue with that yet.

I like it... it has not failed me yet and I use it a lot for finding the work locations that I have to go to.

Just my 2 cents worth.  Have a good one.  Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

I bought a XOG from lowrance. This thing is pretty cool.  Works like a TOM TOM, and then you can buy sd chips w/lakemaps and take it in the boat for exact location on the water with depths, contours ect. THEN.... you can download your favorite tunes and play it like a mp3 player. I found in on the NET for 215.00+shipping.
I give it  :happy1:

northerngal,
i got my wife a lowrance h2oc expidition for her geocaching and agate hunting. i got the mapcreat program to go with it, some of the lakes on that are better that some of the lakes on my lakemaster chip. her sister uses a garmin and she likes that unit, i can't remember the model. the reason that i got my wife the lowrance is i have lowrance on my boat and the chips all work in each unit, i sometimes use her handheld as a backup or sometimes on the atv when icefishing. the mapcreat program comes with the software to download everything on your computer to backup all your waypoints. next question, do you have a sonar for your boat? if not, you may want to look at a combo unit..............tom fellegy

northerngal,
i got my wife a lowrance h2oc expidition for her geocaching and agate hunting.

The Lowrance H2OC and the Lowrance Expedition are 2 differnt GPS units. I'm sure this was just a typo by Tom.

I just didn't want Northerngal to get confused.
