I want to hear the views of others..

When i see a quad, i see one, when i see snowmobiles, i see many in a group..

So that made me think of

Quad=Lone Wolf
Snowmobile= Pack

Why is that???

I dont think thats allways the case with atv's, but rarely do ya see sled heads solo, but that is interesting.... its probably safer to atv solo than sleding.... maybe atv folks are more secure, where sleders need more positive reinforcement or somthing from their kroanies... any psycologists out there? ;)

Guess I would have to ask where are you seeing the quads and sleds. Speaking for up here sleders tend to travel meny more  miles in a day then quad riders just because of availible trails, trail conditions and difference in speed. Up here in the nort woods we sledom ride alone unless it is to go meet up with others or we are staying in walking distance of help and even then somone knows where we are going just like in hunting. Then to spending a night in the woods in the summer is not near as hard as spening the night there in the winter. My quad always has provisions to spend the night if need be, how meny sledheads carry such provisions.

I think for many sledding is a drinking sport so it is for that reason it’s a (pack) sport and a lone wolf can enjoy things for what they are.

 Now I know there is always the few outside the unwritten rule so dont go getting mad you lone sleders
Are you a hunter or do you just kill things? Respect the wildlife!

Very true the ones here who travel in packs go from bar to bar..

But i can see where if one breaks down they need 20 others to help too lol

ok all kidding aside, its just something i noticed, here in ely, its always 5 or more snowmobiles, and us lone wolves on our quads..

i think i would rather be a lone wolf then a pack of snowmobiles

I love to take my time and look at what around me...Nothing like the woods and you

Not all snowmobile groups go bar hopping. My family owns snowmobiles (me,wife, son, & daughter). We belong to a snowmobile club that likes to get out and enjoy the outdoors in the winter. You can make all the observations you would like. We fish in the summer and snowmobile in the winter. I am sure there are groups of ATV'ers also. Maybe they also drink. I have seen trailer loads of ATV's when I have been up north fishing. Maybe they are carrying coolers. We can't judge people like this. If they are drinking and driving a snowmobile or ATV, they shouldn't be. As far as I am concerned, they should be wrote up for OWI.

Just my .02 cents..........

Somthing you have to remeber is that a lot of the bars now days also offer food so just because there is a bunch of sleds or quads parked at a bar by the trail does not mean they are in there drinking. In my day of snomobiling ( before the groomed highways) you went in groups because break downs could come at any time. Th eold saying was you worked on the sled all week so you could ride 2 days then worked on it all week again.

This goes with any type of activity...... i suppose we could make a large list and call everyone problem drinkers.

Ice fisherman= beer drinkers
Card players= drinkers
Softball players= drinkers
Open water fishermen= drinkers
People that go to dinner= drinkers
Watching tv= drinkers
MNO members in chat= drinkers

My point is that people do drink while doing activities, nothing wrong with that IMO. It's the few bad people that give everyone else a bad name, don't punish the majority for the few that are idiots.

The only activity that I can think of that i do not want to see alcohol involved is any type of hunting!!!

My friends and I go on a couple snowmobiling trips every winter and it is a rule that NO DRINKING UNTIL WE ARE BACK AT THE CABIN FOR THE DAY!
We stop at the bars for lunch but nobody orders a beer. As the years go by we see more of this type of snowmobiler. It is nothing like it was 20, even 10, years ago.

By my cabin most AtVs are in packs . The only lone wolfs are the neighbors going to another neighbors . Occasionally you see one out in the woods . The same for snowmobiles .

 I don't care to ride the trails with people that bar hop .  1 with lunch maybe , not a second . I was in the bar in the winter for supper and a group of drunk sledders were leaving. The bar tender asked where they were heading . They said Ely and we were in Finland. I was glad I drove the truck . I've also seen the rest stops on the trails have garbage cans full of beer cans from the summer of ATVers while I was grouse and deer hunting.

Went to the cabin over the 4th weekend with ATV's . There was 4 of us . We rode 2 days and did not run into anyone by themselves . 1 group of 2 , another of 4 and another of a family of 5 . Dusty riding , warm and the flies were thick . I like snowmobiling better .

I think that if people are riding for fun they would be more likely to be in a pack. People who are useing the machine for a purpose such as trappin or farming would be solo. The same would go for horseback riding. If you see a group they prolly just havein fun, some one solo may just be training the horse or have some other kind of purpose.

I happen to own all 3. The sled and wheeler are used for ice fishing, trappin, cutting wood and other stuff. I don't ride trails or anything with them so am always solo.

The horses I use for both. If I am in a group it's just for fun. Alone I am either training the horse or doing some scouting for hunting or ginseng.

It boils down to why a person is doing it in the first place IMO.

Personally if I am out just to enjoy nature I would ride the horse as I can hear the sounds of nature not just the purr of a nice engine. Also you can get closer to wildlife on a horse because animals ain't afraid of a horse like a machine. Thats also why they don't let you hunt from horseback here in MN, it to efficient.
