Only thing I can think of is to take the holes that you cut out and screw them to a piece of square plywood 1/2" thick. In your case since your hole are 10 and 1/4 cut the squares 13 and 1/4 that will give you 1 1/2 inch on each side. Make sure and center them. Hinge them over your holes. Nothing overly cleverbut it is plenty sturdy to walk on and only leaves 1/2 inch to stumble on. They actually take up less space than catch covers when in use as the cover are lay up against the wall.

well....i basically finished the house.  just need to mount the speakers and get some window coverings.
