I own one rifle, I don't want more than one. I can take everything from coyotes to cape buffalo with it. The group I hunt deer with have once again started in on me about using my rifle for deer, pressuring me to use a slug in my shotgun or buy another rifle. I shoot a .460 Weatherby Magnum, it has taken deer, bear and moose so far, I intend to hunt Africa in the future and bought this gun years ago with that in mind. The group complains about the potential for damage to deer with it, I agree, without proper shot placement it will damage a deer. I typically shoot deer in the neck, I never have to track a deer, they are generally thrown quite a few yards, but always dead in their tracks and never lost. I get alot of complaints about not being able to have head mounts because the heads are usually separated or nearly separated from the body. I don't want a head mount, antler mounts from deer are fine for me, they are just envious I think.
What are some thoughts? Should I: cave into the pressure and buy another gun, hunt elsewhere, or start shooting more traditional body shots and have no meat, but a nice head mount?

To each his own. I personally would not use a cannon to hunt deer but if it is what you like so be it.

keep doing what your doing. if it is killing deer who care.sounds like it does it rather efficiently. I know a guy that uses a .338 ultra mag on deer with similar results and he would not consider using something else. I say use what works.

I would think of it as having  another chance at having another gun. You can never have to many. I myself would not use that cannon for deer either. :fudd:

A guy can always get a cape somewhere if you want a shoulder mount. A chest cavity shot with that .460 could destroy most of the animal the way the pressure forces into nooks and crannys. I myself would not use it on deer. Besides the fact that to each force there is an equal and opposite. It is too big of a tool for the job for me. Like pounding a 16d nail with a sledgehammer. The age old argument of the best caliber for all purposes or even a single purpose for that matter will never end. I feel the decision of what a guy shoots is a constant learning experience.

I would buy a smaller deer rifle 270 260 243 unless you like the kick and high price shells. as for neck shots why!! hard nose bullet to the vitals only ruins a few ribs I get more meat off the neck than the ribs. ( a soft kicken 243 in the vitals is better then a mag to the legs) only my opinion cheapest 460 shell i could find was 67 bucks

i think it's overkill.  why would you want to use that on whitetail? it would be like using a 10ga 3.5" load on a grouse..

If the youtube video showing what this gun can do to a 5 gallon bucket full of water is any indication of what it could do to a deer's neck, wow.  Are they decapitated?

To each is own. I think you should shoot whatever you are best with. If your buddies have an issue with the gun you're using, take them to the range and show them just how proficient you are with it. I'm assuming that this being your only rifle you are pretty good with it. I also think next time you down a yote with that bad boy you need to post a pic!

Yeah that's extreme over kill.  I know a guy who shot an elk at about 700 yards with a 7mm mag.  He has also done many African hunts with a .416.  This guy doesn't believe one gun will do it all.  It's a matter of using the right tool for the job.  I'd get a smaller cailber rifle for deer which is actually "medium" sized game and save the bazooka for Africa.

That's ALOT of firepower for deer.  I say use it, but I'm not the one pulling the trigger...

Sure, your buddies give you grief but:

A.  Can you part with some $$$ for a new gun?
B.  Are you a whitetail trophy hunter or meat in the freezer guy?
C.  Why hunt elsewhere?  Not sure what you mean by this.

I shoot a bolt 30.06 with 150 grain rounds.  Now switching to 180's.  They say the 30.06 is the classic deer rifle (I can hear the disagreements now) but I know many who use a 30-30.  Some even with a 270.

Your call.  Good luck.

This is a big gun that I know nothing about, but lets be real how much meat would you really lose if you took a mid rib double lung shot . Say 8 inches behind a meaty shoulder.

I one seen a rabbit shot with a 7mm and it was perfect! All the guts where removed in one shot and the rabbit never felt a thing. Would this be compatible?  :reporter;

I know that is a big gun, but they are urging you to use a 12ga slug instead... Sounds like your buddies are idiots more than anything. Next time one of your buddies looses a deer, ask him if he wants to switch guns for the weekend!

If you don't want to buy a new gun... don't. That was E Z.
