On my way to the fish house tonight a fawn jumped out in front of me. I hit it on the pass side head and front legs were broke and damaged. I got a tag from the cops I hung it from the hind legs skun it down to get the back straps and hind quarters and called it good. I think i got most the undamaged meat . any thoughts

I have never hit one while I was driving, but have been the passenger a couple of times.  They sure do make a mess of things.

i never hit one for the longest time... until a few years ago heading up to LOTW, in fact i was commented to my buddy how lucky I was all these years, as we had been seeing deer on this trip.  Well, that was the kiss of death, I hit one on the way into Deer River, and hit another one on the way out of Deer River.  Fortunately I was only going about 45 mph.  didn't find either one of them.  Needless to say, the other guys in the other truck took lead vehicle on the rest of the trip.

This just amazes me how anyone in this state can reach the age of thirty without hittin one. Three times I have hit deer twice in the same day.

hit a monster buck one year with a buick going from ripley to little falls. the deer hit the front passenger side rolled down the side of the car.. did damage to the grill, quarter panel, pass door, rear quarter panel and broke the windsheild... about 3500 in damages.. the deer was laying on the road as we walked up to it. it jumped up and took off.. we never found it. I even went and looked for it the next day (it was a nice buck).

I hit a nice buck (8-10 pointer) going 75-80 mph on 35 just north of Faribault.  It did a lot of damage to the Toyota Camery.  I could hardly turn the wheel to get off the interstate.  We had to call my father-in-law to come pick us up at 11 pm at night.  My wife and three kids (at the time...have four kids now) were driving home (Owatonna) after a Twins game.  The car was totalled and we bought our first mini van with the insurance check.

I bet your wife loves that mini-van with the kids and all. I bought my wife one after our first and she loves it, and with another one coming it will be even more convenient.
I've never hit one while driving. Been a passanger once. Dang near wrecked a GTP. We were doing maybe 60 and the deer got up and ran away.

I've hit six in my life. Only one was major damage as I hit her square in the middle of my little S-10 about eight years ago that sent my radiator back into my engine. Total damage on that one.

I got a tag for her, but she was pretty mashed up and only got about 1/3 of the meat.

Haven't had the chance to "tag out" with a vehicle.  Although my neighbor hit one and didn't tell me until the following night; I would have told him to get a tag and I would have handle the rest.  Thankfully, no one was injured.

In fact, I have had a student hit one on the way to school (graduated now), got a tag from the Hennepin County Deputy, gutted it and brought it with him to school.

WOW... small world!  That is where I take all of mine as well!  They do an awesome job!

Wife has hit a couple with the Envoy but have not gotten either one of them, have gotten a new hood, grill, fender, passenger door, mirror, bumper, light and rim though.  Son hit one on the way to St Peter got a couple batches of sticks from that.  I found one on the side of the road while going to St Peter for goose hunting.  Had the highway patrol come and kill it and then I took it for some more sticks!  Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

I believe I have hit 6 deer, 2 with major damages.  $4500 on the last one with the work truck.  I hit a turkey once to.  Took out my grill and radiator.  $1200 in damages for a bird!  That was the work truck also.

Personally I have only hit 1 deer (knock on wood).  I rearended a doe with my car.  NO damage.  Thankfully it was before airbags.  Gutted her out befor the cops got there to save as much meat as possible.  They didn't like that.  Always wait ontil the cops get there.

I have gotten a lot (30+) from the cops.  All that you need to do is contact the cops and get on their lists.  You will get a call when they have one for you but you have to get there right away or the meat will spoil pretty fast.

I have seen a deer run into the side of a car that was doing 60 down the road which broke its neck.  The car never stopped but I did.  I didn't loose an ounce of meat on that one.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

I smoked one at 819 this morning....steaks are cooling. It sucks when you do. Last year I smoked I two in one shot and I think I had one run into my trailer as well in nodak, a little over 8 grand in damage and they wouldnt total the truck. Couldnt open two doors or the tailgate, dented a rim and bent the rear axle, snapped off my trailer jack, trailer jacks then slammed into tailgate, from the grill all down the site, I was not too happy.

The best one I have ever seen though buddy bought a brand new truck in december like a day after christmas and hes never had a truck, just a sweet looking chevy. Were coming down our road after picking up his gf and stuff for a fish fry and I was like hey take the back roads mayeb we can have backstraps tonight...as a joke...

"no way dude I love this truck I havent even made my first payment." Well we live on a dirt road surrounded by corn fields and and sod fields. See a ton of deer, he turns onto our road, kills the radio, both hands on the wheel, not talking, hes focused, itsa 40 mph zone nad hes doing 20.

Well a guy has a feeder literally 20 yards from the road. 2 does run across in the headlights and he locks em up and goes that was fuggin close! Were laughing and as I look at himunder his arm out his window, and were still stopped a buck jumps the ditch and runs into his door. BAM!

WTF was that chris? Im laughing my ass as this nice 8 ptr gets up into the headlights stumbles a bit, shakes his head like, damn I didnt see that truck in the road, like a ufc fighter dazed. Looks right at us, than us leaves, no blood or nothing. He said he was gonna cry, he dropped me off than went home. I still laugh my ass off about that. He was the one in nodak with me as well so were cursed together.

I have never hit a deer with a car. A friend of mine had one run into the side of his car. He stopped got out deer was dead, he didnt have a cell phone so he drove half a mile up the road to a payphone to call the sherriff. When he is on his way back to the deer a truck pulls over throws it in the back of the truck and takes off! He's left with 1500 in damage and no deer. He was not real happy to say the least.

I've only hit one deer with a vehicle. It was with a friends truck on the way to Lake of the Woods. This was back in like "88" , -40 , 3AM in the morning ,he was sleeping in the back seat and we were between Kelliher and Upper Red. The vehicle was a "87 " Nissan Pathfinder with a 5 speed manual . I've driven sticks since I'd started driving . This doe jumps out in the road and stands there looking at us . I step on the brake and the clutch thinking I'm going to slow down . Nothing happens until I get right to the deer and then all of a sudden the truck stops as the deer is leaving .I hit the doe in the back hip and it runs away leaving a broken corner light . To this day I don't know if it was that hydraulic clutch or the brakes were iced up . The roads were good except for patchy frost and we didn't even slide a little . The reason I know it was -40 is because when we got to Cyrus resort the thermometer there read -45.

I had real close call 2 years ago coming back from the cabin. I was on the expressway between Two Harbors and Duluth . I was doing 75 with a guy in a pickup tail gating me in the left lane going by 4 cars on the right . I see a nice buck jump out of the woods on the right to the bottom of the ditch . The next jump he was up on the shoulder and the car on the right started slowing up . I look in my mirror just as I'm going to hit the brakes and all I could see of the truck behind was a windshield, so I punched it . By now the buck had made another jump and was in the middle of the right lane . I went by the buck as  he was jumping again , my wife was saying " oh S*** " and you could see this buck like he was looking in the window. The buck missed me but made it between me and the truck behind me  who was now deciding to slow up. The truck slowed up just enough that he bumped the bucks back end ,he stumbled and continued his run across the median and the other lane of traffic . That truck behind me forced me to take my chances with the buck . If I had hit the brakes he would have rear ended me . I did not stop , all of those other vehicles stopped quick and continued on except for that truck who pulled over onto the left shoulder. Maybe that is on person who won't tailgate that hard up there again.
