Based on my initial research, steel scope mounts are better than aluminum or aluminum alloy mounts.

Correct me if I am wrong.

The next question I have is which type of scope mounting system should I go with:  Dovetail, weaver, leopold quick-release, or weaver quick release?.

Leupold makes a dovetail one piece base for my gun.

It with the rings will be cheaper than the weaver rings and one piece steel base that I can get.

Thanks for your advice.

Okay, so I think I am going to go with a one piece weaver-style base and leupold QRW quick release rings.

The other option which I am leaning against is the quick release base and corresponding rings.  I am thinking that the 2 screws per ring in the other system will be better.

When I worked at gander we always liked the leupold stuff better higher quality.  I think that i would go with the one piece weaver style base and the leupold qrw rings.  But that is my 2 cents

i use the quick release mounts on my muzzle loader... work great.
If a gun kills people then I can blame a pen for my misspells?

I use weaver style bases & Burris Signature Z rings.  You can really crank the scope down  & they won't leave a mark.

I had already ordered the rings and mount by the time I learned about the Z rings.  Consequently, I think I am going to have to lap my rings to improve the surface area contact.  I heard the Z rings are really good in this regard (no lapping required).

I got the mount and rings, lapped the rings, and mounted.  All went smooth, and I don't think a gunsmith could have done a better job.  The lapping bar and alignment jigs are for sale/trade in the classified section, as I don't think I will use these again.
