Lake Vermillion ice

Went out on Lake Vermillion for a few hours yesterday. While cross lake travel would be dificicult without a sled, there are several roads plowed out around the lake. We put in at McKinley park at Soudan and headed out to a twenty two foot break just off Ely island. The amazing part of the trip was that when we went to drill the holes for our portable I wished yhat we had put on the auger extension. There was approximately thirty inches of ice! This is the most ice I've encountered on any lake this season, undoubtably due to the roads being plowed. While the walleyes eluded us this trip, we caught a good number of whitefish that are headed to the smoker.
