 Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 1/4/09:fishing2:
Happy New Year!
This past week has given us lots of snow, over 10", which is not helping the slush and ice formation problems on our big lakes.
Well traveled areas on Kabetogama and Namakan are packed and travel is not a problem. Trying to get to a favorite spot off the traveled routes could lead to difficult travel in slush.
Pike being taken by spearing enthusiasts and on tip-ups, no big fish noted this past week.
Walleyes are showing up but the best fishing locations for winter are difficult at best to get to, lets hope the lake firms up.
Although the snow has impeded travel on the lake, it has set us up for great land trails.
All the snowmobile riders think the trails are in the best shape they've seen in many, many years.
Groomer operators from all sources are grooming up the trails and keeping them in excellent shape.
The entire northern half of the state has good trails so long trips in between your favorite communities could make for a good weekend.

 Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 1/11/09

Let's assess winter thus far; cold, snow, cold, more snow and so on. All the aforementioned has led to great inland snowmobile trails and slushy conditions on the lake.

Angling and spearing continue, with some success in the well traveled areas of the lake. Pike remain the most active fish, walleye bite has been spotty as have favored destinations.

Anglers are finally reporting some better ice conditions as more of the lake is getting packed down. The favored depth for walleye is the 26-30' range, crappies being taken occasionally in the Kabetogama/Sullivan Bay portage area.

Snowmobilers should take note that the land trails are in the best condition we've seen in many years. Our trail base is 24-30".

Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 1/18/09 :cold: :snow5:
Brrr, then some, several days in a row of -40 with high temps below zero kept anglers off the lake most of the week.

Friday brought the first hint of warm weather and a few anglers. Getting to your favorite spot still proves to be very difficult with slush not being very forgiving.

No catches to report this week, except one really nice walleye - see the picture - 31.5". The forecasted warm weather and accompanying cold may solidify some of the slush making traveling on the ice less formidable.

Snowmobilers will find the land trails in the area to be awesome, 3" of fresh snow this past weekend. Trails are very well groomed, and thus far not much traffic.

The park service has staked more trails, but they are not expected to be groomed this week. Riders should be cautious on the ice and be prepared for slushy conditions.

Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report 2/15/09

Huge temperature swings and mixed precipitation spoiled all mid-week fishing in our neck of the country.
This past weekend the temperatures hovered around normal and anglers managed to get some hours in. Reports were spotty and it was overall a quiet weekend for fishing.
Many snowmobilers were celebrating Presidents weekend on land trails, which were excellent, and the lake slush from the mid-week rains firmed up and riders could run the lakes with patience, but did have to settle for a bumpy ride.
This is the last week of the regular season for walleye and pike on Kabetogama and all Minnesota inland lakes, fortunately for us we have our Canadian border lakes, Namakan and Sandpoint where our season runs into April.
Lots of winter left for sledding and fishing in this part of the country, our snow base is still near 20".

Hope to see you soon,
