duck calls are one thing my money flies to but i was real fortunate this year to have a girlfriend that likes me and got me a new acrylic zink ph2 i love that call its loud but can get quiet and has a great tone for a feeding call but its kinda high in my price range ($120) but i also have a wood mallard tone single reed that is much more affordable (15-20) but i don't use this on big water very much just to help close ducks in since its very quiet in comparison but maybe you should tell us kinda what you were/are lookin for in a call  :nerd:
i also have a timber rattler (acrylic/ double reed), echo diamond wood (single reed),acrylic winglock (single reed) and a 5-1 whistle and thats just my starting line up i also have a back team should i forget my starters at home :oops1:

Primos makes the only PHAT lady i am willing to put my lips on and i do 3-4 days a week in the fall. its a great call and it never fails me. my friends have a few expensive calls but out here in nodak calling isnt that important, if they want to be there they will come and if they want to be somwhere els....well you get it.

Why dont you look at getting both?

CS calls makes a stabilized wood w/acrylic insert in I believe any of his duck or goose calls. They are top dollar calls, 125 is starting unless you find one cheaper on an ebay auction. Amazing looking calls! I have quite a few of his calls and my Prophet and Preacher in African Bloodwood sound great.

Feather Duster has one too, I don't remember the name grassfire or prairie fire. They have good looking calls in a good price range. I remember at Game Fair they were selling a duck and a goose call combo for like 100 bucks.

Wood has a sweeter, mellow tone than an acrylic, but they are a little harder to keep looking nice. I have had one barrel split on me.

Like Chris said - Keep them warm enough or keep blowing -  ;)
If you happen to get a chance between shooting, open up your call and slide a dollar bill between the reed/s to help get some of the moisure out.
And spit out your chew before you start calling -  :rotflmao:

If I were going to get one call it would be acrylic. I like the range I can get and they hold up well. I am a Zink guy but there are a ton of good calls out there. I blow the Zink Paralizer and I love it, but it all depends on what you are used to. I have also use the Zink Little Man and like that call a lot too. I know som guys that use acrilic for feild hunting and Wood for big water hunting because wood is lesss harsh. I don't do a lot of big water hunting so I don't have the urge to test the theory, but it may be someting you should concider. All-in-all i would be willing to bet that if you go with an acrilic call you will be happy with your decision. One thing that I have found that you may want to keep in mind is that cheep calls sound like cheep calls. Good luck!

PS. If you go to a sports shop to look for a call and one of the workers is a good caller the are ushulaly MORE that happy to blow the calls and let you decide. If you are a proficent caller do it yourself but if you are still learning this is a great way to hear the differences.

I dunno...  I guess I grew up in a different time and place.  I have never spent more than 25 bucks for a duck call.  I have an assortment of haydels.  They work and when hunting with my buddies that have them they sound just as good as anything else I hear out there.  Some of the worst calling that I have heard on the water on any given day is where the ducks will go to.  I guess that further bears out that you have to be in the spot that the ducks want to be in before anything will work.  Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

this is a very good point you have to know when to use a call to there have been day when i've been in the right spot and thrown out a decoy and done no callin and got a limit there have also been days when i've deployed all my dekes and called and called and called and maybe shot 1 so you don't need an acrylic call but on those days when the ducks are high and your not on the X that call sure can help

I have a Haydel "cutback" for that.  Very loud!  Very clear!  Being on the "X" does help a lot though!  Take care and N Joy the Hunt././Jimbo

I have a wood and acrylic on the lanyard. Get their attention with the acrylic and finish them with the wood.  :archery:
Where I'm from calling, flagging and decoying are just basic skills and the kids will do a little guiding just to pay off some bills.
