Many program opportunities for Memorial Day Weekend at Wild River State Park

Enjoy Memorial Day weekend by learning more about Minnesota's wildlife.  This weekend at Wild River State Park, there will be chances to learn about everything from butterflies to white-tailed deer to owls and even snakes!  Take a hike around Amik's pond with a park naturalist intern for a chance to actually see some of these critters.  Finish of the weekend with a guest program by a St. Croix National Scenic Riverway Ranger!

Friday, May 22   8:30 p.m.  at the campground amphitheater.   Seasons of the White-tailed Deer.  See one of Wild River’s most popular wild animals - and also one of our biggest concerns - in this short film that covers deer through the course of a typical year.

Saturday, May 23 10:00 a.m. at the visitor center. Butterflies in Native Prairies and In Your Back Yard.  A  lavishly-illustrated talk on the beauty, variety, and “secret tricks” of colorful and sometimes elusive butterflies in Wild River State Park.  Learn how you can attract some of these butterflies to your own yard!

Saturday, May 23 2:00 p.m. at the visitor center. “Graveyard” Detectives (and Big Bear Bones).  Can you read the clues that park staff have unearthed during the 30 years since Wild River State Park was established?  View a great collection of animal bones (no humans) and try to figure out the stories behind them.  Got a bone of your own you’d like to have explained?  Bring it to the program!  After the program, see if you can puzzle out how to put our jumble of black bear bones in order.

Saturday, May 23  8:00 p.m. at the campground amphitheater.  Owl Stories.
Park Naturalist Dave Crawford tells true tales of memorable encounters with owls during the 32 years he’s worked in State Parks.

Sunday, May 24 11:00 a.m. at the visitor center.  Wild River Snakes!  Which Minnesota snake is really good at playing dead?  Which one smells the worst?  Learn about the snakes found in this park, see live examples (Winnie the garter snake and Ripley the bull snake), and touch a representative of this fascinating group of animals.

Sunday, May 24  2:00 p.m. at the visitor center:  Amik’s Pond Hike.  Explore the variety of nature along a trail through woods, wetlands, and river shore.  One mile loop hike highlights interesting plants, birds, and whatever else crosses your path.

Sunday, May 24 7:30 p.m. at the campground amphitheater. Guest Program by St. Croix National Scenic Riverway Ranger.  An entertaining and informative talk with some possible audience interaction, topic to be announced.
