Minnesota state parks Open House is this Sunday

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites families to sample the array of activities and special events available at Minnesota state parks during the Open House on Sunday, June 7.

Special family-oriented events scheduled across the state include:

A pool party starting at 1:30 p.m. at Buffalo River State Park in Glyndon
An afternoon of music, food, and old-fashioned picnic games from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  at Itasca State Park in Park Rapids.
Outdoor Recreation Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Mille Lacs Kathio State Park in Onamia, where visitors can try out canoes and kayaks, attend skills sessions on fire building and outdoor cooking, take a nature photography class, and more.
For a complete list of events and hundreds of ideas on how to have “all-out” fun this summer, check out the “Summer Starter Kit” online.

In addition to providing free admission, Minnesota state parks will be handing out 15,000 environmentally friendly reusable bags, courtesy of Cub Foods. The bags will contain the Minnesota State Parks Guide, the spring/summer Programs and Special Events catalog, and a few other surprises.

“Cub Foods is pleased to be part of Minnesota State Parks’ Open House event,” said Brett Wing, vice-president of marketing for Cub Foods. “State parks are a vital component of environmental sustainability, and our reusable shopping bags are just one way Cub can assist others to ‘go green.’”

For the past 10 years, Minnesota’s Touchstone Energy Cooperatives have made the Minnesota State Parks Guide possible with their generous financial support. In addition to highlighting what’s new at the 72 state parks and recreation areas in Minnesota (camper cabins and kayak rental in eight new locations, seasonal camping at five state parks, and much more), this year’s guide also includes energy-saving tips provided by the cooperatives.

“The state park sponsorship fits well with the Touchstone Energy commitment to community involvement,” said Jolene Jensen, Crow Wing Power public relations coordinator. “We want to educate our members about how easy it is to conserve energy and save money by providing them with some practical tips.”

Get free admission on June 7 at all 26 Minnesota Historical Society sites and museums, too. Double up and visit a historic site in or near a Minnesota state park. More information in available online.
