who is taking some youth out on youth waterfowl day instead of being selfish and going out on archery deer opener? :bonk: i would take someone but i dont have anyone to take. just a reminder to everyone to get children out into the outdoors more to pass on the traditions and keep the sport going, and it also creates alot of good memorys that they will always remember. :happy1: :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:

I still don't get the youth day thing. We never had one in my generation and there is a lot of hunters in my age group. What's the difference between taking them during the regular hunting season? To me the dad can just leave his gun home one day if need be.

I here ya hunter,I still remember my 1st hunt with my ole man and that was back in the 60's,since the youth hunt deal started I think the only thing it accomplished is blowing out the local ducks early.

It gives kids opertunities to have good hunts without having to contend with the old guys and gets them a little practice to build up confidence before the regular season. When the adult cant cary a gun they pay more attention to teaching the kids about decoy setups and all of the good stuff that goes along with hunting.

I don't agree, everything from decoy prep before the season and then the big day is burned into my memory,he led the way on decoy placement for both puddle ducks and divers,my 1st year we only could camber 1 shell, well in my case I had a single shot H&R but always got the 1st shot,1st duck was a woodie...The old man followed up the boyz,I really don't see the benifit of youth day, besides the ducks are all pretty brown still, how do ya teach a jr shooter to pick out the drakes?

I wouldn't be worried about shooting a hen vs. a drake.  The object of the youth hunt is to get more people involved, especially young people.  I have read in the past that the average age of the hunter is rising. At the same time, more and more kids are involved with sports, Internet, I-Pod, and their cell phones.  If we don't get more youth involved and pass down time honored traditions, then who will?  The outdoors teaches kids things that a classroom or a cell phone or a video game cannot.  Just my 2 cents.
Take a kid hunting and fishing... It'll be the best thing for generations to come.

I am for the youth hunt for Ducks...But not deer.

Youth hunt got both my siblings into hunting few years ago... Still won't clean the birds, but they enjoy being out and hunting... Shows the kids a new meaning to living life at it's fullest once their hooked.

To each his own... But cancel the youth firearms season for deer. That's the worst.

I guess I still haven't heard a good reason for having it early verses the regular season. Like I said, the father could leave his gun home one day. Wouldn't it be the same thing. Like snow said, it puts the scare on them early. I will never be a believer in the early hunt.

The youth hunt is not a bad thing. I don't believe it really scares all that many birds either. But, I do agree with you guys about it not really being needed. If an adult can't take a few days out of the season to spend with the kids..........well that is where the problem is. You need to start them young, take the time and play at their speed. Bring some snacks, shoot a couple ducks if you get the chance, and head home when they are done screwing around with the sticks and stones and what not. Let them have some fun. My boy is 5. This will be his 3rd duck opener. He has been talking about and asking when we get to go duck hunting for the last 3 months already!! Every time we drive by our lake! In fact he is more excited about it than me and will not get to carry a gun for a few more years yet. I guess what I am trying to say is we shouldn't need special "youth days" to get the kids involved. They can have them one way or the other and I don't mind. Guess it will just be one more excuse for me and the hound to head out with the kids in a couple years!

I think the youth day is a good idea for those who hunt public land. You dont have to worry about your first time hunter getting rained on by bb's and seeing the rudeness that alot of people bring in the woods or water with them. Let them learn about the sport.

I'm totally against the youth hunt.  All it does is chase the ducks away, and I'm positive of that.  I would think a kid would have much more fun just hunting the regular season, opening day or whatever, with the older folks.  Screw the youth hunt.

I see both sides of it, yea it does chase the ducks away man o man the teal and woodys are outta here when those first couple shots get made some years, but on the other hand i agree its a very good idea you can get the kids out at a time in the year when everybody is not so gung ho to get ducks you get to intruduce them at a time were they can enjoy hunting cause you dont have some :censored: shooting at your decoys on the other side of the slough. that just my 2 cents.
