Outdoor enthusiasts can ready for the snow by lacing up a their own pair of Ojibwe-style wooden snowshoes at a two-day workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 17. Instructors will guide participants step-by-step through the process, or they can work at their own pace.

To register for the workshop and order your size of snowshoes, call 218-498-2124 by Dec. 18. The cost is $70 per pair. Class size is limited to 16 people.

The workshop will take place at the Moorhead State University Regional Science Center, which is adjacent to Buffalo River State Park. To get to the Regional Science Center, take the exit for the park off U.S. Highway 10 (14 miles east of Moorhead) and follow the signs. A map is also available online.  For more information, call the park office at 218-498-2124 or the Center at 218-477-2904.

UPCOMING CANDLELIGHT EVENTS
Participants can use their newly constructed snowshoes at the family-friendly candlelight events taking place at Buffalo River State Park on Saturday, Jan. 30, and Saturday, Feb. 6. Ice candles will illuminate a .75-mile trail for snowshoeing or hiking from 6 to 9 p.m. both days. A 1.25-mile trail will also be lit with candles for cross-country skiing. After exploring the trails, visitors can warm up around a campfire and enjoy refreshments.

The candlelight events are free, although vehicle permits are required to enter Minnesota state parks. A one-day permit will provide a vehicle full of family and friends with a whole day of fun for just $5. Year-round permits, $25, provide unlimited access to Minnesota state parks for twelve months from the month of purchase.

More information on other candlelight events taking place at Minnesota state parks is available online.
