Where to go?

I can't make it west to my parent's this year for Christmas (they got hammered with snow, up to 19 ft. drifts), so I'm heading north to MN.  I want to go ice fishing for a day and overnight, but can't decided because of too many options.  I'll have a car (no 4 wheel drive), with a sled, shack, and no vexilar.  I'd like to winter camp at the lake, and don't care what I catch.  I'd prefer to get in on some eelpout because they're different, but will fish for anything.  I'm going to pick up whatever specific lures I need on the way up.  Where would you recommend I go?  I'm not comfortable driving the car on the ice because it'll be a rental.  Thanks!

how far north?  I would just try and rent a sleeper house over night somewhere... there are literally thousands of places to go... look at the forum index and check out some of the sponsors banner adds under the various topics.  Mille Lacs would be a good place, only about 2 hours from cities... or Lake of the Woods if you want to drive...

I'm willing to go north to Lake of the Woods.  I looked into getting a sleeper cabin, but I decided to just take the money and invest it in more equipment.  I'm in grad school, so I'm not exactly flush with cash.

I'd say save the money on renting a shack, a car, and buying gas; then buy a vexilar and just fish on a lake nearby.

I'd say go for it. Lots of fun seeing new lakes and areas. Winter camping is doable, even enjoyable, but you must be a tough sucker...... its well below zero this morning. What good is a vexilar if you don't go anywhere to use it? Leech Lake by Walker is good for eelpout, but not usually till February.
