Got a chance to hit the St. Croix with my good friend River Dan last night. I met him down in Prescott and was on the water at 4:30. He already had two in the box from Handling in the channel.

We made our way up the St. Croix a ways and checked a couple of our usual haunts on the way. Didn't mark many so went to a rocky area and marked a lot of fish. As per our norm, we started lindy riggin. Dan put out his 8'3" and 6'6" rods with black hooks and a 4' snell. I put my 8'3" down with a chartreuse hook and 4' snell. All had minnows on them. For my second rod I used a 1/2 oz chartreuse jig with a Gulp Alive 5" Shad on it. Never tried the 5" shad on the river before but heard from Air Jer that it was working for him so figured it was worth a go.

Didn't take long and I had a small sauger on the jig. We moved over a ton of fish and got a few shorts on the lindy's as well. No keepers in the first spot though. So we moved to the sand in a little farther up river. Marked tons of fish but no takers. We got your normal sheep heads and striped bass but no Walleye's to bring in. So we packed up and head back south.

Went back to one of our tried and true spots that didn't mark any on the way out and they were there in numbers! We used the same techniques and started to catch fish. Lots and lots of shorts but got some nice keepers mixed in. I started casting the jig with the shad on it and pulled in a nice keeper Walleye. Dan managed a few more keepers for the boat. After not getting a bite for a while and watching Dan get bite after bite (though he missed a lot and burned up our fatheads!!) I put a leech on the jig and dropped it down. Got another keeper on that in short order and that ended up being it for me for the night. Dan managed one more in the box. We ended up with 8 keepers in the box and a lot of shorts thrown back.

Was a great night on the river and it's always a lot of fun to get out fishing with Dan.
Friends are like buttcheeks..........crap might separate them, but they come together in the end.
