Campground construction underway at Lake Shetek State Park

Tent and recreational vehicle campers will discover new campsites with many amenities next spring at Lake Shetek State Park, home of the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota and the headwaters of the Des Moines River.

Construction has started on a new 32-site campground that will have full water, sewer, dump station and 50-amp electric hookups, with power provided by solar panels on two nearby picnic shelters.

The new campground, to be named Sunrise Campground, will be across the road from the existing lakeside Wolf Point Campground, which will close Aug. 1 to undergo a major overhaul.

“The Wolf Point Campground was built in the 1930s and needs substantial improvement,” said Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Park Manager Kerry Christoffer.

When the construction is complete, Wolf Point Campground - to be renamed Oak Leaf Campground - will have 42 remodeled campsites, most of which will be upgraded to provide 50-amp electric hookups. Eventually, the campground will also have four camper cabins.

“We hope to have all of the construction and seeding done by fall,” added Christoffer. “Both campgrounds will be open in 2011, as soon as the vegetation is sufficiently established.”

Camping will be available at the Park Lake cart-in campsite, the Wilderness Group Camp, and the Prairie Campground (12 rustic campsites) throughout construction. Although the campsites in the Prairie Campground are typically first-come, first-serve, campers may call the park office to request one of those sites. Staff will do their best to accommodate such requests.

The Zuya Group Center will be available through Labor Day weekend and will reopen in the spring, as usual. The camper cabin will be closed from Aug. 1 until the campground opens.

All other areas of the park will remain open to visitors for hiking, boating, geocaching and other activities.
