DNR honors Minnesota youth at State Fair
(Released September 9, 2010)

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Commissioner Mark Holsten presented Ryan Bart, a senior from Staples-Motley High School in Todd County, with the DNR’s 2010 Future Farmers of America (FFA) Award at a Sept. 3 ceremony at the Minnesota State Fair.

This is the 19th year the DNR has presented this award, which is given annually to a FFA student who has demonstrated initiative, leadership, creativity and achievement in the conservation and wise use of natural and agricultural resources.

Bart joined the FFA in 2007 and started his Environmental Science & Natural Resources Management project. He wanted to build on his interest in plant research, including nutrient uptake, plant pests, composting, organic crops and soils.

His project includes working at the Central Lakes College Ag Center near Staples where he helps with agricultural techniques through research and test projects.

Bart’s project goals include: gathering hands-on experience when dealing with agricultural issues; assuming responsibility for actual agricultural research projects and pursuing a career in agriculture or natural resources.

His interest in agriculture and natural resources started early in his life and was fostered by helping his grandparents at their local greenhouse. There he started learning about the life structure of plants and the basic needs of plant life. He is motivated by the science of agriculture and how much everyday life relies on it.

He plans to attend the University of Minnesota-Crookston and obtain a degree in agronomy, and pursue a career in agriculture or natural resources.

Bart is a member of the National Honors Society, Staples-Motley High School orchestra and Ducks Unlimited.
