Hearing scheduled to discuss Denton Slough management plan

Improving waterfowl habitat and water quality of Grant County’s Denton Slough will be the focus of a Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) public hearing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, at the Wendell Fire Hall, 670 State Highway 55, in Wendell.

Denton Slough, located in Lawrence Township, is a 135-acre shallow basin located within the Rabbit River watershed. The DNR owns approximately 60 percent of the shoreline as part of the Kube-Swift Wildlife Management Area.

Continuous high water levels during the past 15 years have resulted in turbid water and a lack of aquatic vegetation, degrading water quality and clarity to the condition typical of many shallow lakes in west-central Minnesota.

The DNR’s proposed management plan would make the slough a Designated Wildlife Management Lake and allow water levels to be managed to improve habitat and water quality.
