The weather here on Lake of the Woods has cooled back down to normal for this time of year. The bite has remained very good out on the main lake. The Rainy River bite is still hit or miss. However, there is a good bite to be had in the river in the early morning and in the evening. Water temperatures have dropped back down to around 50 degrees. The shiners are in the river, but they have been spotty. Some consistent fall weather should get things rolling again for the river fishing. The ten day forecast looks good for the Rainy River bite, with daytime highs in the mid 50’s and overnight lows around freezing.

Yesterday was our 1st Annual Chili Bowl Fishing Contest. It was a success! Congrats to John Yankovec & Troy Williams for topping the field of 50. The two earned bragging rights for next year and also took home $1000 for their first place finish. It was their first time entering a tournament and they also had one of the smallest boats in the field (on a tough windy day). Tom Stay and Steve Mollberg were second with Scott Solheid and Rick Johnson finishing third. Second place through fifth took home $500 and there were 7 teams randomly selected for a $100 entry fee return. The rest of the 50 team field left with an assortment of door prizes. Contestants also enjoyed a free dinner which included chili with all the fixings, burgers, hotdogs, and fries.

First through third place brought in 5.46, 5.26, and 4.75 pounds respectively. It was a tough day on the river with steady 20 mph winds. Fishing during the mid-day lull also made for a tough bite. The number of fish caught indicates the river bite is not in full force yet. However, there were many fish caught which fell in the protected slot or over the 28 inch mark that were not allowed in the contest. (The contest allowed 6 fish per team between 14 and 19.5 inches.) We’ll be holding the 2nd Annual Chili Bowl on October 15th, 2011.

There’s only a couple weeks left in October. We still have a few cabin openings. Don’t miss out on what Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River has to offer in October!
