January meeting to discuss vegetation plan for Gervais Lake
(Released December 16, 2010)

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold a public meeting to discuss a proposed Lake Vegetation Management Plan (LVMP) for Gervais Lake in Ramsey County.

View plan: http://www.mndnr.gov/areas/fisheries/eastmetro

The meeting will take place at the Little Canada City Center, 515 Little Canada Road East, Little Canada, on Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. (one hour before the Gervais Lake Association meeting).

An LVMP is a document the DNR develops with public input to address aquatic plant issues on a lake. It seeks to balance riparian property owners’ interest in use of shoreland and access to the lake with the preservation of aquatic plants, which are important to a lake’s ecological health.

The main focus of this LVMP is to bring management of aquatic plants on Gervais Lake into compliance with Minnesota rules, to find opportunities to increase vegetative buffers around the lake, and to build in flexibility to address invasive species if they become a problem.

DNR has partnered with the Gervais Lake Association, the Ramsey-Washington Metro Watershed District, the city of Little Canada, and the city of Maplewood to develop the draft plan.

Citizens may submit written comments on the plan to the DNR until Feb. 4. Written comments may be submitted to Sean Sisler, Aquatic Plant Management, 1200 Warner Road, St. Paul, MN 55106. Citizens may also e-mail their comments to sean.sisler@state.mn.us
