Minnesota coastal program accepting proposals for St. Louis River watershed
(Released December 22, 2010)

The Minnesota Lake Superior Coastal Program (MLSCP) is accepting applications through Jan. 18 for federal grants involving land acquisition in the St. Louis River Area of Concern (AOC). Applications within the designated boundary of the AOC, including the Nemadji River and the greater St. Louis River watershed, will be considered.

The MLSCP is a voluntary federal-state partnership administered by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and dedicated to the comprehensive management of our coastal resources. It is charged with coordinating the selection of Minnesota projects for federal grants for land acquisition. The Great Lakes AOC land acquisition grant competition supports the acquisition of ecologically significant coastal habitats and areas in need of habitat restoration.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will prioritize projects that are ready and eligible for funding. Projects will have a grant start date between June 1, 2011, and Oct. 1, 2011. NOAA anticipates that $1.9 million will be provided for these grants. However, funding is contingent on FY 2011 Congressional appropriations.

The MLSCP strongly encourages potential applicants to contact the program prior to applying for these grants. Those interested should contact Lisa Angelos at 218-834-1443, or mailto:lisa.angelos@state.mn.us , for further information about the Minnesota application process and to discuss potential projects.
