Crossbow info

Well after an MRI and finding out I need surgery to attached the tendons back to the bone in my shoulder the doctor advised me to give up the bow whether I have the surgery or not.  If I have the surgery Bow hunting is done for good with a regular bow according to the Doc.  So does anyone shoot a crossbow?  What brands should I look at?  What price range am i looking at for a decent one?  Optics?  Figured now is as good as any time to start looking, might find a deal.  But I'm still not sure I just won't continue to use my bow and live with the pain.  Thanks in advance for any help.

The bad part is my other shoulder is having the same problem but I didn't say anything about that one yet.  To many years of living by the motto "work hard and play even harder".

I Got the same advice 3 years ago. Had to have the surgery and took about a year to get most of the use out of it but not as good as hoped. Went to an Excalibur Vortex cross bow and like it. More noisy than a regular bow but still can hunt at least and they are very accurate. 3 arrows, 3 deer. Gettin old sucks. Good luck with your shoulder.

I have both a Barnett and a Horton...both are adequate...you can get an entry level "decent" bow around $400-$500. From there the sky is the limit.  There are some really good packages available that come ready to go from the box...i.e. three dot crossbow red dot, whisker biscuit, quiver....I would suggest getting the mechanical auto-cocker instead of the generic string that is available on the market...it makes it much easier to uncock when the bow has not been fired.  You can always cock and de-cock by hand but there is a stressful jolt on the arms when uncocking.  Don't go below the standard 150lb draw wt as this really makes a difference in distance, I have mine set from 20yards out to 80yards with enough power and penetration that I could go out beyond 100yds if I could see that far.

When you say Horton or Barnett what is the model of each bow?  What are the pros and cons of each?

      General, you are young.  GetR done.  I am 50 and have only dealt with the shoulder problem for a year.  It bites.  Because I can not take a minimum of 8 weeks off from the job I will have to live with it.  It may take some time but with patience and exercise I am sure you will be able to pull the bow again.

   I think you misunderstood me.  Get the surgery done.  Then with the exercise and time you will be shooting poorly with a bow in no time.   I made a set of dentures for a guy.  We put them in.  They looked and felt good.  The only problem was he had a lisp when he spoke.  Nothing I could do to fix the problem.  I finally asked if he had the lisp before he lost the teeth.  He said " yeah,  I had it my whole life.  If you couldn't shoot before. You won't be able to shoot after.  You just won't have an excuse.

     My Barnett is an old version of the Quad 400 (about 10yrs old, was my grandpa's) ...it has a higher f.p.s.(345 vs. 260) than my Horton does and is listed at almost twice the energy(122ft-lbs vs. 61ft-lbs).  Numbers are from their respective web sight descriptions.

     My Horton is the newer Summitt HD 150.  I find myself using my Horton more as it is lighter and the package I got came with a three dot crossbow scope and a three bolt(arrow) quiver.  The Horton also has an adjustable rear sight deck to allow for adjustments without having to change the scope settings.  This is a great feature for longer distances but takes quite a bit of practice to really become comfortable with and dial it in.  I have the scope set at 15, 30 , and 45yds, but can sink a bolt into a target at 100yds with a decent grouping and good penetration with just a turn of the "dial-a-range" sight handle.  The first time I shot at 80 yards I sank a bolt with a field tip into an oak target frame about 4 inches...

If I had known that all I had to do was have the tip of my pointer finger cut off to be able to use a crossbow in WI I would have done it years ago...
