Trout season opens within the BWCAW on Saturday, January 1st, and outside on January 15th.
The ice varies on many lakes, but should be OK for traveling by foot, skis, or snowshoes.  The thickest ice reported is on Shagawa Lake next to Ely, is about 10-12 inches.  Larger lakes like Burntside and Snowbank have about 7-8 inches, and as little as 4-5 in some places.
The trout opener outside of the BWCAW on Jan. 15th should allow ATV or snowmobile travel to get to your fishing spots, but I'd leave cars or trucks on the shore unless some very cold weather sets in.
I'll post ice reports on a weekly basis until then.

Thank Great Outdoors, might be seeing you in Feb. for the trout shindig.

Otherwise we will be making a trip up in march like last year!
Marry an outdoors woman. Then if you throw her out into the yard on a cold night, she can still survive.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for sending me the photo of your new Polaris Ranger, aka the "Troutmobile." Looks like a sweet ride! Let's see if you can keep this one on top of the lake in 2011 :whistling:

If I remember correctly, you could hear the old ranger from 3.7 miles away coming towards you.... ;D

It goes in stealth mode in the snow, but gets a bit noisy on bare ice! :happy1:
