Free Turkey Hunting Education Clinics start Saturday

By Paul A. Smith of the Journal Sentinel

Free Turkey Hunter Education Clinics will again be offered this year around the state. The clinics are presented by volunteer instructors and are sponsored by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

Clinics typically last two to three hours and are designed to cover wild turkey biology and behavior, hunting methods, regulations, safety precautions, and landowner/hunter ethics, as well as tips for scoring birds and ideas for preparing meals from wild turkey.

The clinics are for all ages and experience levels, including beginners and experienced hunters looking to brush up on their skills and learn new techniques. The clinics will be held from late February through late March. Information and a listing of the dates and locations for each clinic are available on the wild turkey page of the DNR website or from the DNR customer call center at (888) 936-7463.

In southeastern Wisconsin, clinics will be held:

Saturday (Feb. 19) at Richard Bong State Recreation Area in Kansasville.
Feb. 26 at the Gander Mountain in Waukesha.
March 5 at the Gander Mountain in Germantown.
March 12 at the Gander Mountain in Franklin.
March 19 at the Gander Mountain in Kenosha.
March 26 at the Kettle Moraine State Forest - Southern Unit headquarters in Eagle.

All begin at noon.

The 2011 Wisconsin spring turkey hunt begins April 9-10 with the Youth Turkey Hunt. The first 5-day regular seaon runs April 13 to 17. The sixth and last runs May 18 to 22.
Take a kid hunting and fishing... It'll be the best thing for generations to come.
