DNR fisheries seeks comments on Aitkin area management plans
(Released March 8, 2011)

Citizens interested in learning about or commenting on Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) strategies for managing Aitkin area lakes and streams have until Monday, March 28, to ask questions or submit comments.

“Management plans describe the past, present and desired future conditions of the waters,” said Rick Bruesewitz, Aitkin area fisheries manager. “The plans identify specific management activities planned for that lake or stream in the next five to 20 years.”

Every year DNR fisheries staff prepares or revises individual lake and stream management plans for several waters in each management area. In the Aitkin area, plans for the following lakes and streams will reviewed. All waters are located in Aitkin County.

Round Lake (01-0070)
Section 10 (Wladimiraf) Lake
Sissabagama Lake
Farm Island Lake
Minnewawa Lake (amendment)
Big Pine Lake
Long (01-0101) (amendment)
People can review current plans for lakes and streams in the area as well as recent fish population assessment information at the DNR’s Aitkin area fisheries office, 1200 Minnesota Ave. S, in Aitkin. Office hours are 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Individuals also may call 218-927-3751, extension 228 or e-mail rick.bruesewitz@state.mn.us . Plans may also be viewed online at www.dnr.state.mn.us/areas/fisheries/aitkin/index.html.

Public comments on management plans will be taken through Monday, March 28, 2011. Comments may be submitted via mail or e-mail.

Suggestions for management of any of the other lakes and streams in the Aitkin area are welcome at any time and will be considered when those plans are due for review.
