Campfires will be allowed throughout the state starting Friday

Recent precipitation, cool temperatures and higher evening humidity has lowered the potential for campfires to cause a wildfire in northeastern Minnesota. Because of that, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will remove the last of the restrictions on campfires in that part of the state beginning at 12:01 a.m., Friday, Sept. 30.

Although campfires will once again be allowed any time of day, and will be no-longer restricted to resorts or campgrounds, the DNR still urges everyone to use caution when enjoying a campfire.

Here are some tips:

Before lighting the fire, clear the vegetation around the location, have water and a shovel handy.
DNR recommends the campfire be attended at all times.
Use water to drown the coals, stir with the shovel and then wet the coals some more.
Fire should be completely extinguished before turning in for the evening.
A safe campfire is one that is cool to the touch.
