Youth scare em away day.
While I don't think we should need special youth hunts to keep our youngsters interested in the great outdoors, I am not against them. The reason I say this is I think the kids should be going out either way, special day or not. As for scaring the ducks away, I don't buy it Hunter2. Most of these kids are only out a couple hours at best and they are spread out alot more than the regular opener is as far as hunter densities on the water. In years past, (before the new regs) the best day is the second day anyway after all the ducks were shot at hard the day before.
I took out jr. and he was able to take his first duck at 7 years old. Pretty pumped he was. ten rounds out of the single shot .410 and he connected. I was pretty happy for him. And it is likely a day neither of us will forget anytime soon. He did wing one other before this one and we were unable to recover it. I wasn't ready to deal with a new dog and a new hunter the same day! Guess we will fight that battle in a few weeks!

To be real honest the best days are those late in the season when you bust ice and are the only boat on the water, killing birds or not. When youth day is nothing but a distant memory from a month and a half ago. And yes Jr. will be with for some of these mornings as well.

They started this back when my youngest son got to go 1 yr.  One of the best hunting trips I ever had.  He would turn to me and say did you see that and I would reply yep but look whats coming.  He shot 4 ducks that day.  Now he can out shoot me every time out.  The only thing I would have done different is if you want decoys you pick up the bag and put it in the boat.   :whistling: :whistling:

Not a fan either, its not needed, and I agree areas that are hit hard during this event push the birds out/away.

I took my nephews out for youth day and it was a blast to see their smiles! I Also hunt the same pond on opener and had great luck. I am all for youth waterfowl day. I think we need to be more concerned about all the wetlands that are getting tiled for farmers to get that extra acre of land! From what I can tell from my area is that duck hunting take a way bigger hit from greedy farmers then youth waterfowl day! Thats how i feel about it.

nic,

Plans/laws have been implented to minumize the loss of wetlands as we know it today, the laws came a little late but its better late than never, today we have over population and urban sprawl to deal with,as far as the youth hunt, fact is they do push the local birds out,as far as the smiles go,they would've been there on our regular opener, mine was as a kid and still is a fond memory.

Snow its weird that you say that cuz I have seen more tiling done in the past couple years then before, And from what I have heard from a farmer himself is they pay to have a new ponds built but it never happens cuz its controlled by dnr and we all know how that budget is doing.... And like i said youth day did not effect the area i am in at all. The few amount of kids that go out is not going to chase the locals out, maybe out of the one pond being hunted to another pond in the area and are back the next day. Maybe your area is different but its what i see in my area. You say you got facts that it does? I'm listening....
